Katelyn Joan 8/11/08
The outcome of my delivery left me with a beautiful baby who I am so in love with , its unbelievable. But the delivery itself was never what I expected in a million years.
I was scheduled to be induced Tues 8/12. On Sunday night 8/10 (tech Monday morning) at 12:15 AM I got up to go to the bathroom , I peed , then went to go lay back down in bed and felt a warm gush of fluid. I went over to the bed stand to get my glasses and felt another warm gush. I knew right away and told DH my water broke. I was leaking fluid so we got a towel and I sat on the bed on it while I waited for the Dr to call me back. Then this green , long mucousy thing came out, I am assuming the plug.
The Dr told me to come down and they will check me out. I jumped in the shower real quick and headed to L&D. We left the house at 12:51. I got my first contraction in the car.
I was only 1cm dialted and my water had def broke. By 5AM the Dr did an internal, very, very very painful. Head wasnt down and still only 1cm so he says "crank up the pitocin" So they do and contraction are coming 2-3 min. They hurt like hell (at only 1cm!) but the nurse told me how to breathe through them so that helped alot.
All of a sudden at 10:15, the anestisielogist (sp?) comes in and tells me my platelet count is too low and they are double checking the blood work. So they draw blood again and I wait 2 hours for the results. Finally - the get the results. In order to have an epidural, your platelet count has to be at 88,000. When I first got pregnant, mine was 98,000 but now had dropped to 58,000. I was not able to get an epidural. I had 2 choices; 1. deliver naturally with Demoral , but risk passing an infection to the baby or causing the baby to hemorage in her brain. Chances were low for that , but still a chance. 2. deliver c-section under local anestesia.
It was obvious choice #2 was the only option but I was so so so upset. I waited 9 months to find out what was and to have that moment in the delivery room and I was totally getting jipped of that. I was going to be completely put out!! Just so unexpected. DH was allowed in, thank GOD or I would have completely lost it.
So he at least got to have that moment when he heard "its a baby girl". He was so happy but refused to hold her bc he wanted me to be the first to hold her bc of how upset I was. My family who was waiting in the waiting room got to see her before me. I didnt see her for at least an hour and a half after she was born and I barely remember it. I barely remember anything from the first day. I was in and out of sleep all day Mon & Tues
The recovery has been difficult and painful. Anytime I think of how everything went down, totally unexpected and how that moment of me seeing her for the first time was stolen from me, I get upset and I cry. But the outcome is a healthy baby girl who I love so much. Its true, what everyone says, I couldn't even picture my life without her. Dh has been awesome, he has totally been my support, I couldnt have done it without him.
So here are some stats:

Oh, D, I am so sorry things didn't go as planned. But I do think you made the right choice for your safety and for hte baby's. So that's what you had to do. I would have done the same thing. I can understand the sadness of not being awake to hear "it's a girl" but you had to do what you had to do.
I am so glad you are well and she is here!!!!!
She's a cutie!!! Adorable!

She is beautiful! I'm so sorry you weren't able to have the birth experience you wanted, I can imagine how "robbed" you feel about this.
The good this is that you are both healthy and have the rest of your lives to bond!
Just remember, just because this birth expereince was not what you expected, if you choose to have another child, don't be afraid that this will happen again!

Wow - you never hear the name Joan anymore, so even that struck me My mom's middle name is Joan, and my grandma is Joan, so that's how I got the name. That is wayyyyy too funny!

I am so sorry about your disappointing birth experience. I had a similar story with my daughter's birth so I know how difficult it is to be robbed of an experience you've waited so long for.

Wow, glad everything turned out OK. I'm just curious as to what would have caused the brain hemmorage in the baby if you had delivered vaginally without an epidural? I've never heard that before, is it a side-effect of Demerol?

I cant quite remember bc I was so emotional when he was telling me. They kept on asking me if I had ever been diagnosed with a blood clotting disorder and they were also worried about me hemorraging if I delivered vaginally. So I guess that had to do with it
