3rd grade science
what kids are learning today is insane. My niece is in 4th grade and she was reviewing algebra the other day.
I didnt learn about algebra till 6th grade and I was in the "advanced" classes in my school. LOL
DS is in kindergarten and by end of this week he willbe learning to write his address down and next week starts estimation/addition/subtraction. I dont remember learning all this in K. Maybe recite my address but not write it. its amazing. LOL

The only advantage of knowing your address and phone # at the earliest age possible is for safety reasons.

I'm having a hard time with the pressure that DDs are facing with just hw alone, plus the material is way more difficult to understand (ELA and Math new CC) than it was 2 years ago.
So, the pressure to review each night for an upcoming test is a lot for a 7 or 8 yo to do at 7 pm at night (after hw and dinner and this is coming home at 5:45pm).
They don't even do extracurricular activities on weekdays and I don't know how parents/kids do it.

I know!! That is why when I saw it on his hwk sheet for this week, I was like wtf?I asked my DH, "Is he going to be sending out packages soon?"
Last two weeks he just had to know it which made sense, but w.e. Just going with it.

I totally agree, They don't do any activities because we just don't have the time. Both DH and I work, so by the time we get home it's 6:15-6:30pm. And I'm just trying to get dinner ready while DH does homework with the boys. Oh and we can't forget the 20-30 mins of reading each night.
When we lived in the city of Chicago, DS was in an accelerated program which gave a lot of work every night and a bunch of special projects. This is our 2nd year in the 'burbs of Chicago and our district is considered one of the best in the state, but DS stresses about the fact that he's not in the advanced classes. We had to sit down with him and explain the quality of the school he's in is better so being in the 'regular' class is just as good (or better) than his old school. He doesn't get as much HW, but the type of work is definitely different. I hate to see him put so much pressure on himself.

Re: 3rd grade science
My 3rd grader has at least 2 tests a week. Math, social studies, science, all of which she has to study for. Thankfully the teacher sends home study material at least a few days before so we can review daily instead of crammimg the night before. Science test tomorrow, Math Friday this week. The science and social studies material makes me nervous! I think its alot for 3rd grade but so far so good. Even though my daughter's teacher is not a big believer in homework (Thank God!), we still do spend a lot of time studying and reading.

Mine has 15 vocab words she has to look up and memorize within 3 days for a quiz. She also has another Soc Stud test this week. Of course this is on top of the regular hw.
I found out on Monday that she has to study for these tests onThursday and Friday, but it seems like we have no time to study.
I stopped expecting my kids to get 90+ on each test anymore. They/I just don't have the time to devote to so much in one week!
