.4 position? (update in first post)

i got a call for an interview for a .4 LI teaching position.

i'm going to go interview for experience but what do i do if i get it?

i dont think we can afford a p/t position but it would be so much closer to home by 26 miles and i would be IN a district.

has anyone been in this situation? feedback appreciated!!

UPDATE:

So I attempted to get to the interview with the horrible rain. I left my house in West Babylon at 845 to get to Huntington for a 10:20 interview. At 9:40 I was not even 5 miles from my house. I called to reschedule and they wouldn't. They said today only. Deer Park Avenue and 110 were both closed and those are the two main roads heading to the north shore.

I couldn't believe it. But if they weren't willing to reschedule in this, then maybe its not a school for me.

On a happier note I got called a few minutes ago for an interview for a FullTime Business position in a LI school out east (all the way out east though) so I have that next week!

I think it is going to be a lot less $$ than a full time position. Plus you will probably not get any benefits.

I definitely would go on the interview and see how you like the school. If it is a great school and you feel like you want to get your foot in the door then I would consider it, but if that is not the case, I wouldn't take it just to be on LI.

Re: .4 position?

I have never personally been in the situation, but I have known people that have. Atleast it is a "foot in the door" so that if anything were to open in the future you would most likely be considered. Also, maybe the rest of the day you could have an additional duty, such as a 1:1 or an aide or something else along those lines. YOu also never know what could happen between now and then, the position could expand past .4. Go on the interview, and see what happpens...you never know!! Good luck!!!! Chat Icon

Re: .4 position?

I don't need benefits...so it is just salary I am looking for.

The interview is for business, and I am also certified in Math, which may even have another door open for additional periods.

I hate being in these situations!!

Re: .4 position?

Definitely interview and wait and see what happens. You'll obviously have to compare salary and everything, but I would probably go for it - total foot in the door. You could always supplement your income from there with tutoring - everyone always needs a math tutor!

I agree. See what the salary is going to be. Our school has had positions like that which have turned into full-time. As the others have said, it it is a great "foot in the door".

Re: .4 position?

Just be careful that it's not .4 in business and .6 as a per-diem sub.

Many districts do it that way and you're going to end up working FT and not being tenure-tracked.

If you aren't full-time it doesn't count towards tenure? Like if I did 6 years P/T (I hope not lol) but that wouldn't count?

nope! some leave replacements arent tenure tracked either, as FH has found out.

I don't think so. Unless it specifically says "tenure-tracked" I would assume it's definitely not!

Re: .4 position?

A part time position is definitely not tenure tracked. I was originally hired in my district as a .7, then, at the start of the school year, I went up to .9. Within two weeks of school I was officially full time because of an oversight in the original schedule.

I chose the part time position over a leave replacement and it worked out great. They started counting my tenure track as of the date that I went full time, so I get tenure two weeks into school instead of on the first day.

You would be paid .4 of the salary also, mor ethan likely without benefits. But as someone else posted it may be that you can sub, which may not sound great, but it is extra money.

It is a tough decision - good luck!

that's crazy that they wouldn't reschedule! I wonder how many candidates actually showed!! I guess better to know now that they're totally not flexible than later on!

Good luck at the other interview!!! Would that commute be better/worse than the NYC commute?

That's what I am trying to figure out.

Queens 38 miles
Out East 43 miles

Queens: With Traffic
Out East: Against Traffic

Queens: Can car pool with 2 others
Out East: All alone

I can't compare salaries because I don't have a salary schedule. But don't LI schools normally pay higher as you acquire more years?

I know it doesn't matter now, since I didn't get the job, but I like to over analyze everything and kind of know what my decision would be in advance in case I am offered the position. I don't like to just jump and say yes/no.

Re: .4 position? (update in first post)

Hmmm, that's a toughie!

I like the carpooling! You can save some serious gas $$ that way and have some company. Would you feel comfortable at school without a car if one of your little ones gets sick?

Looking at my salary schedule, the year to year jumps are minimal (2-3%) it's when you move up with credits that the cash adds up quick (a good $5,000 per jump). I don't know anything about the city, though.

Plus, once you're in a LI district, you're in there. If you go for the city, are you going to find yourself in the same boat next year - trying to get a LI job?

Damn, I didn't help at all!!

you did make a good point about if one of them gets sick. The good thing is though my mom is the primary care-giver then, so I know its not like day care where I would have to run and pick them up. And carpooling would be nice for the gas savings and to have some good company.

I have a city salary scale and it says for a masters and 1 year (which i have)

I should start off with 50,353
Then next year I should have 50,728
Of course if contracts get negotiated then it would be more..but $375 isn't even 1%.

Re: .4 position? (update in first post)

that's awesome that you have your Mom, one less thing to worry about. I think that's the only reason why I'm going back next year at all - I know she'll be with my parents and she'll be okay.

that starting salary is very, very similar to LI!!! I don't have my schedule in front of me (I'll try and grab it tomorrow after summer school), but I think the year to year steps are very close too (maybe a little more on LI, but not much more). You only really move up when you have more credits.

Re: .4 position? (update in first post)

Ours work on a formula and the steps going down are a small increment, and it is the left to right movement where you would increase more. (Do you have any add'l credits they could give you credit for?)
