Re: 4 renovations that kill a home's value
for me I agree with half
I want a pool and a huge jacuzzi
one of the first things my brother told me about his new townhouse is the master bedroom bath has a jacuzzi
I think you should make the house yours- then worry about resale- if you are going to live there long term
ugly extensions are a huge turn off for me
but trendy finshes isn't a big deal for me either- if I like them- but I can see what they are saying on that

I want a pool and have a jacuzzi...and a SS kitchen!
But this is my long term home...I'm in love with it as is!

I totally agree - im so sick of these shows that show you "oh, a fresh coat of paint will add $5k in value"

Re: 4 renovations that kill a home's value
I agree with some of it to an extent... A pool is ok as long as it doesn't take up the ENTIRE backyard. It can always be fenced so small children have no dangers.
The trendy thing - yes I agree with that - I will offer less for a house if it has an outdated trend because then I will have to spend $$ to update it. I am suprised to hear stainless steel is a trend though, I thought that was timeless. I guess pretty much everything becomes dated after awhile.

I have seen the prices on SS appliances come down quite a bit from where they were. I know that's pretty much the case with anything when it's not so new to the market anymore.
I personally prefer black appliances over SS, but DH really wants the SS... so I will lose that battle since he's the self proclaimed chef

Re: 4 renovations that kill a home's value
I read somewhere that Europe is usually the trendsetter for kitchens and SS is still in there (and it started before here), but I have no source to back me up

Re: 4 renovations that kill a home's value
I like this sentence the best
"Ultimately, don't expect a future buyer to pay up for the luxury you considered an essential."
so many people think their house is the best but duh its because its everything they wanted in it so of course its the best to them.
Great article thanks.

Re: 4 renovations that kill a home's value
many good points! I see a pool as a huge liability with a toddler and all but others love it as a feature in a home.
We bought the SS appliances and I wondered if it'd be dating the kitchen a bit down the road - but then again, you can always replace the appliances if you wanted....easier at least then replacing the cabinets or countertops!!
