Non-medical blog update and just about the best. thing. ever.
My Sister in Law was jogging and got hit by a car this morning (they live in NJ); she's got some serious internal injuries, please say a prayer for her, she is the most amazing wife and mother (they have 3 little ones)
UPDATE 11:30pm Hi everybody and thank you all for your prayers and good wishes for my SIL Today has been nothing short of torturous and we have a long night ahead of us but I have a bit of an update for all who've asked:
Her injuries were multiple and serious (compound leg fracture, collapsed lung, impacted liver and kidney). CAT scan earlier revealed internal bleeding, which has been and continues to be the main concern. She had a 4 hour surgery to repair her kidney (both have been saved! ) and cauterize any internal bleeding. She has lost a tremendous amount of blood, as well as clotting factor, so she's now being transfused as much and as quickly as possible; we pray she makes it through the night.
THe only positive news I'm getting is that there was no head/brain injury, and THAT is a real miracle considering her other injuries. Also she's being treated at NJ's FINEST trauma center so I know her care is top notch.
Again ladies, thank you SO much for your thoughts here, I can't explain why but it really does help and I'm a strong believer in the power of prayer
I remain hopeful that I'll have a positive update sometime soon. THe waiting around for news is quite torturous really. xoxoxoxoxo
PS: This appears to have been caused by a drunk driver I'm praying for him and his family too, because no matter how this turns out his and his family's lives have changed FOREVER as well.
Update 2 9am Sat. March 28: Hi everyone what a looong night that was but Maureen showed a bit of improvement; at 2am my sister was able to see her and she reported that her color was good and her hands were warm, a good sign that the transfusions are working! At 4am she was beginning to stir and was responsive to the doctors - a GREAT sign. Of course the docs are cautious, we're not out of the woods by a long shot yet, but at this point it is HUGE to get any news that's not negative. No updates since 4am but I'm hoping for continued improvement today if all goes well. My heartfelt thanks for those prayers and good wishes, they are, as always, WORKING. ************ Hi everybody Wow I was amazed to see this post still up here this morning, thank you all for your messages of compassion and concern, I can't even tell you how blown away we are by all of the support and kindness that have come our way. I can confirm to you today that people do NOT s*ck!!!! OK there are 1 or 2 exceptions but overall, people REALLY amaze me (in a good way!). My SIL is holding steady for now (still on a respirator, and being bombarded with all kinds of meds/ fluids/ blood products/ etc) but our M.O. right now is that no news = very good news indeed. Waiting is pure torture; any of you who've had or currently have a sick family member surely know that
Our next hurdle is an upcoming surgery that will allow the doctors to explore the internal injuries more thoroughly, and to change or remove the packing material which is applying pressure to her internal organs. We PRAY that what they see is a whole lot of healing and nothing like Friday's surgery where she nearly bled out. Lots of testing happening this morning so we await further news there. Over the weekend the 'sternest' doc on her team told us that we are now running a marathon so we all have to prepare for a long haul. There WILL be setbacks, as well as improvements, without a doubt, so we can't afford to get too hopeful with the good stuff nor too morose with the bad stuff . Great advice, but awfully hard to execute!!!
I thought it would be nice to share a pic or two of my brother's family so you all have a 'visual': Dennis and Maureen dancing at my wedding (Nov 2007):
Their beautiful kiddies, Ava, Jennifer, and Liam:
I know I'm only "web friends" with all of you here, but know that your good thoughts (and prayers if you're into 'em) are POWERFUL; she's being treated by a WORLD CLASS trauma team, and they've let us know that 90% of patients would not have made it this far, so from my family and I, THANK YOU for the great vibes you're throwing out into the universe.
Errands to run now but I'll be back online later this afternoon. Cheers girls and guys!!!!!!!!!!!xoxoxo ******************************* 7pm Monday March 30:
OOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH THERE IS *NOTHING* AS GOOD AS GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our update after "Moe's" surgery this afternoon (my 12 yo niece created a great BLOG yesterday to give updates and progress reports to our extended family and friends):
"Your prayers are working! The doctors are so happy with the way things are going after the surgery earlier this afternoon. The internal bleeding that was a result of 'crushed' blood vessels leading to her kidney has stopped! We continue to appreciate all your support and prayers, and are welcoming one good thing at a time. God Bless! "
What can I tell you all, except here's a little tidbit... our Maureen is about 105lbs. Soaking wet. It must be 105lbs of TITANIUM or something because she is one tough cookie. She had those 3 precious babies -- #1 was born at 10.5lbs, #2 a whopping 12lbs 8 oz, and #3, their "peanut" Ava, was 9.5lbs. And that was with NO gestational diabetes either Yeah, my 6'2" brother played rugby for 10 years but we know who's REALLY got the goods here.
Big hugs of all of you, I've always known my family has received blessing upon blessing, but Maureen's improved status is just something that CANNOT be explained from a solely medical perspective, so I am deeply grateful that God has blessed us again over these last few days.
You guys are the best, I'll be catching up with all of your lovely FMs this evening after baby goes and maybe we can even have a little fun
**************************** Thursday update, Good morning ladies!!!!!!! We have another surgery scheduled for this morning, so while the whole family is "clenched" with anxiety we know this should be relatively "uneventful" if there is such a thing relating to surgery. I'm still in amazement at the strength of my brother and his kids (the little ones obv. just know the minimal details, mommy fell down and got hurt). Here's an update from yesterday on my niece's blog: All continues to go well as my Mom remains in very stable condition. The surgery scheduled for tomorrow is still on and will hopefully prove to be a success. The amount of food they are giving her via feeding tube has increased. This evening when I was saying goodnight, my mom opened her eyes!!! Only for a second, but it gave me great comfort to know that she knows I was there. We ask that you keep up your prayers for tomorrows surgery, and ask God for another miracle. Every night before bed I say two things to God. I ask him to watch over my mom, and I thank him for all of you. You have all been there for my family during this trying time, and I know that you will all be there even once my mom is all better! You all truly are wonderful friends. God Bless! ******************* Update 4/5/09 Words just cannot say enough to thank everyone who has prayed or sent a good wish to my SIL and the family. HUUUUUUUUUUUGS to all of you!!!!!! She continues making amazing progress While the medical stuff roll along, this recent blog update was posted by my SIL's Dad, Jim. This might give you some insight into the loving background she comes from (and she's the 7th of 8 children in her family so her parents are REALLY amaaaaazing too!!):
Dear Maureen In the silence of the ICU your whispered prayer of suffering and pain is our new beginning as we mend with you, in contrition, repentance, forgiveness and compassion. Like the poet, you love to the depths and the heights of ideal grace that we strive for and, will find when we see our God face to face. Dearest daughter you reign in majesty and beauty from a throne disguised as a hospital bed. Love , Dad
And today, this afternoon, as they lowered her sedation......... a SMILE.
