40th Birthday Party
I am invited to the 40th birthday of my best friends wife. The party is out at a pretty nice place. What is the going rate for a gift? Is it the same per person as a wedding? I don't want to seem cheap, but at the same time I don't want to spend a fortune. Also what are other gift options for both men and women as an alternative to money?

I've never heard of giving money at a 40th birthday party.

Re: 40th Birthday Party
Unless the person is an abstainer, I would get him an expensive bottle of champagne.

Re: 40th Birthday Party
You don't give money at a 40th birthday party.
I'd give a nice bottle or wine or a small gift I'd think she'd like... but not cash.

Re: 40th Birthday Party
I think a store gift card or restaurant gift certificate works good. I would spend $50. In fact I am bc we are going to a 40th bday party on the 17th. Def not like a wedding where you'd try to cover the plate

Re: 40th Birthday Party
We're going to a surprise 39th bday party next week for a guy and I got him the Bang & Olufsen earphones. They came to about $180 and I split the cost with my sister (who is also invited).
