41-day marriage between Chad Johnson and Evelyn Lozada ends over condom fight
I was never a fan of her but this is sad
Basketball Wives star Evelyn Lozada has filed for divorce on Tuesday, August 14, 2011 from ex-Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chad Johnson, who was formerly known as Chad Ochocinco, after the number 85 on his football jersey.
The 41-day marriage ended after a fight between the couple last Saturday when Lozada allegedly confronted her husband over a receipt for condoms which she discovered he had purchased.
Their argument escalated into charges of domestic violence, with Lozada claiming that she was head-butted by the 6-foot-1-inch footballer, causing her to seek immediate medical attention, as reported on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 by ESPN, ABC News, the Star Tribune, and other media sources.
Johnson, who is 34-years-old, had appeared on the tenth season of Dancing With the Stars, paired with two-time champion Cheryl Burke, and was eliminated from the show as one of the final four competitors on May 18, 2010.
He was arrested and booked last Saturday by the Broward County, Fla. Sheriff's Office on charges of domestic violence, spent one night in jail, and was released on $2,500 bail and ordered by a judge to have no contact with Ms. Lozada.
The situation continued to go downhill for Johnson on Tuesday, when he was served with divorce papers, and also dropped by the Miami Dolphins, losing both his wife and his means of employment on the same day.
Ochocinco signed with the Miami Dolphins on June 11, 2012. He had previously played with the New England Patriots during the 2011 season. Prior to that, he sent 10 years with the Cincinnati Bengals as a wide receiver, from 2001 to 2010, setting a number of Bengals franchise records.
His impressive career wearing the Bengals orange and black jersey emblazoned with number 85 included the most receiving yards in a season (1,440); most all-time receiving yards (10,507); most receptions (751); most touchdown receptions (66); most receiving yards in a game (260); most seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards (7); and most touchdown receptions in a game (3, tied with other players).
Lozada, age 37, is one of the 6 cast members of Basketball Wives, aired by VH1. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. of Puerto Rican ancestry, raised by her mother, and moved to Miami in 2007. The couple were married in Saint Martin on July 4, 2012. Johnsen sent one of his fans an all-expense paid invitation to their wedding, after receiving a tweet from the woman.
She was previously engaged to NBA star Antoine Walker. The two had a 10-year relationship, which resulted in a daughter, Shaneice. Ms. Lozada is known to have a volatile temper when provoked, and has frequently argued on air with other Basketball Wives cast members.
Her lawyer, Michael B. Gilden, said when interviewed by "The Insider", a television gossip show, "Given the recent events that have taken place, Evelyn has decided to file for divorce and move on with her life." She claimed that her marriage to Johnson was "irretrievably broken."
Johnson himself was conciliatory, saying only kind words about his wife, telling ESPN, "I am going to let the legal process run its course. I wish Evelyn nothing but the best, I have no negative words to say about her, the only thing I can say is I love her very much."
This was not the first time that athletes in the public spotlight have gone through a divorce. Tiger Woods immediately comes to mind, and more recently, Kim Kardashian divorced Kris Humphries of the New Jersey Nets, filing papers on October 31, 2011, just 72-days after their lavish televised wedding.
The rich and famous are different from the rest of us. They can afford the best divorce attorneys.
