Jen - counting my blessings...

Thomas Joseph 8/4/09

I saw my OB on Monday the 3rd for my weekly visit. At my prior visit, he told me to consider my options - we could do the c-section next week (week of the 3rd) or the following week, week I was due (due 8/11). The position of the baby was above and over my hip bone at 39 weeks and already measuring 9lbs. After much discussion, DH and I decided to go for the section rather than trying to induce.

We go in to the appointment on 8/3 and while the nurse is weighing me, etc she says "oh I see here you are scheduled for a section tomorrow" This was me Chat Icon Chat Icon I was like what?! I am!!? Doctor comes in and says he reserved the OR in case we decided to go that route. After a long discussion weighing risks vs. benefits, we decided to do the section on the 4th. DH and I went home - a little shell shocked and nervous, did some last minute things, went out to eat etc.

Morning of the 4th, was at the hospital by 9am. Was told the section would be at 11:30am. Well we were bumped 2x by 2 emergency c-sections....adding to my anxiety. I was mentally prepared to go in at 11:30! My anxiety was through the roof. I was scared of any pain and the unknown. Finally around 2pm, they wheeled me into the OR and gave me the spinal to numb me from the waist down. It wasn't pleasant, but not as bad as I thought. They had me lay down and they put the curtain up - within 5 minutes I was numb from the waist down. My DH came in and sat with me and at this point, I had tears rolling down my face - I was just scared and emotionally overwhelmed. After going through IVF 2x, I couldn't believe the moment was finally here.....!!! They told me when the baby was about to come out I would feel a lot of pressure at the top of my abdomen as they pushed him out of the incision...I heard my OB say wow he's a big one (and I thought thank God, the sonos were right - it's a boy Chat Icon ) - and a moment later I heard the most glorious sound on earth - my baby's cry!!! Chat Icon I never felt an emotion like that in my life. My DH cut the cord and they brought him over to me. I went to recovery afterwards and my DH went to the nursery. After a little while, DH and I were in recovery and they brought the baby to me and I nursed him for the first time...what an amazing experience.

Afterwards I was so exhausted....they brought me to my room and my family came by..they brought the baby in to see me. Since I was BFing they brought the baby in every 3 or 4 hours to nurse. I will be very honest, that was the hardest part - being physically and emotionally drained, finally getting some sleep and there's a knock at the door at 3am - here's your baby! Lights on, action! Chat Icon The pain the first few days was unbelievable. I could not shower until the 3rd day. The day before I went home I finally started to feel myself. Now, 11 days later the incision is still tender but I am much better.

Now without further adieu, here is my son Thomas Joseph Jr Chat Icon : who weighed in at 9lbs 3 oz!
