Colin Edward 10/30/09
On Sunday 10/25 I woke up with contractions at 4:30AM - but they were SO mild I wasn't even going to go to the hospital - but given my history of a quick delivery, I did. I was in fact contracting, but they were mild and every 7-8 minutes. The MD suggested breaking my water so I would be in a controlled environment for delivery. I declined and went out to walk it out - thinking it would help. Long story short, I remained at 3CM dilated, 80% effaced that day and woke up the next day with no contractions, and the next day, and the next day.
On Thursday, 10/29 I had my regular appt in the evening. Hanauer noticed baby's heart rate was on the slow side (baseline of 100-110 when it had been 140). She asked me to stay and be monitored. I did that for 20-minutes or so and while she didn't think the baby was in immediate danger, she did suggest I get induced that night. I told her I'd try her recommendation. She said if I didn't go for induction, she'd send me for testing the next day - and that she wasn't comfortable letting my pregnancy go much longer. Obviously I wasn't going to risk it.
So, I called DH and told him to pull our stuff together and called my mom to come sleep over for Ryan. I got home ca. 7PM and returned to the hospital by 10PM. I waited there for a bit to see what we would do next (they put me on the monitor and I was contracting 1-6 minutes apart - clearly not a pattern). Hanauer came in at 11PM and gave me the lowest dose of pitocin she could to get things in gear.
After the pitocin, I did start to actually feel the contractions and they were steady - but I hadn't had an internal since my MD appt and didn't have a clue where I stood.
A little before 3AM I asked them to ask someone to examine me. Since I was going pain drug free I needed to hear I was progressing. Mentally, I needed to know I was getting somewhere. I was having some good contractions (the nurses were actually laughing at me b/c they'd monitor the contraction knowing it was a big one and I'd just say, "that's a good one, right?")
A resident examined me at this point and I was 7-8CM. She broke my water and that was it. I def. felt them good & strong after that. When the baby was coming down, it def. hurt. Hanauer came in about 3:10AM and I said I was ready to go. She examined me and I was 9CM but it felt like I had to push then. She examined me again during a contraction - OUCHHHHH and then gave me the OK to start pushing. A few pushes later (about 10 minutes later), Colin Edward arrived. 8lbs 2oz. at 3:24AM. I was not shocked at all that he was a boy - I knew it, and was thrilled (as is DH!).
