Blood Cord Banking

Is anyone doing this? My doctor just spoke to me about it. It sounds great if it works- its just a little expensive. I was just wondering:

1. What people know about this
2. If anyone has done it and
3. Approximately what it cost.

TIA!!

Re: Blood Cord Banking

Im considering it but I don't know.

If anything happens and your baby gets sick, the blood is all disposed of because the doctors wont use the baby's own blood since it may carry the disease too. So the only time the cord blood is good is when say, a sibling gets sick and can use it.

I think we're going to pass though.

From my research, that is only the case when the child is born with a blood disease. I think if something develops later in life, even a few months later, the blood can be used. I could be wrong though...

I read that if the child gets cancer they wouldnt use the blood - I dont know. There is so much info on it. You might get some great info from Googling it though. Good luck making your decision Chat Icon

Also...I might be wrong but I think they can old bank the blood for a certain amount of time?

Re: Blood Cord Banking

There have been numerous posts on this subject. Do a search but this topic can be debated forever.

It comes down to what you feel right to do...It is like an insurance policy... There is no right answer.

For us, we did not bank our blood with a lab for a slew of different reasons..

We did bank my blood with the the North Shore Hospital which has there own bank that anyone could use or if you need you can use it too. This did not cost us a penny.

We did the same at LIJ.

Re: Blood Cord Banking

We are not banking for several reasons, but the two main ones are it's too expensive for something that isn't even concrete, and the cells are only good right now for a max of 15 years when frozen. Other reasoning was only a sibling or a mother would be able to use the cells besides the child. Just not worth the $2000 up front, then 130 bucks a year to us.

Re: Blood Cord Banking

We thought long and hard about this and decided not to. My doctor said it is sort of a "scam" for various reasons. It is not recommended by the American College of Ob and Gyns or a pediatrician group. My doctor also told me that a lot of doctors are offered kickbacks from cord blood companies to promote this program.

There are public banks available that will bank the blood for free. This blood is available for anyone who needs it so it wouldn't necessarily be available for your child. However, if these programs gain popularity and more people participate, it increases the chances that your child can benefit from cord blood (w/o the cost). NJ (where I live) just passed a law that makes it mandatory for hospitals to offer this public banking. I'm not sure if this program will be implemented by my due date (which is only 18 days away) but I'll have to ask my doctor about it.

this public banking. Is it for cord blood or regular blood? I have said this before but we chose to do it. At the time I decided that we spend this money on other less important things, that if I ever needed it and didnt do it I (personally) couldnt forgive myself if I (agian just my opinion) didnt do it because of money. That being said my pediatrician at that time (3 years ago) told me he would not have recommended it for the reaosns stated by MrsJ. I am impressed by the technology and would have another chat with my pediatrician about whether I would do it with any future children.

That's good to know. I delivered at LIJ 3 months ago and I was told they didn't do it (I was interested in this rather than banking with a private company). I guess they just started. Next time around I will do this.

Re: Blood Cord Banking

Some hospitals dont do public cord blood banking.. HOWEVER-- if you go onto Marrow.org, and do some research for cord blood donations, there is even an 800 number you can call and they send you a packet you fill it out and they send you the kit to bring to the hospital.. NO MATTER WHICH hospital you deliver in, as long as there is a "collection" agency nearby..

I HIGHLY recommend doing this, as MrsJ mentioned above, her info is right.. Your babys cord blood is kept not for that baby persay, unless it needs an immediate transfusion at birth, but for other siblings, parents or grandparents. Th blood may or may not be compatible.. Look on the Marro.org site-- they had the best non-biased info I found.

I would rather know that maybe some baby or child with leukemia might be helped with the blood from my childs cord blood, than know that Viacord or other "brand" name places are staying in buisness for something that my family may or may not be able to use. JMHO

Yes, my doc told me they just started the program. After I gave birth, they took the placenta to see if it was usable. It was so someone from the program came to me the next day and asked me a bunch of questions and fill out paper work. They also took vile of blood from me and a swab of saliva from my son.
