Oh, How things have changed!
My in-laws are in town, and last night MIL was telling me about her experiences having DH and his sister. They lived in a very small town in Wisconsin, though not too far from Milwaukee (which is hardly a booming metropolis, but they weren't TOTALLY in the middle of nowhere either.) Anyway.
- MIL had DH's sister via c-section in '69. They kept the woman and child for fifteen days after the birth. They also fed the baby a lot- SIL was already sleeping through the night by the time they got her home.
- She was in the hospital with DH for 11 days. He had something wrong with his heart when he was born, and they had to do a procedure. She wasn't allowed to see him for two days.
- DH was VERY fussy, so they put him on skim milk at birth. He never got forumla, ever.
- MIL's roommate in the hospital smoked. It was allowed back then.  But the nurse did ask her to stop because MIL said it was getting ridiculous. I just can't believe there was a time when that was allowed in a hospital.
I was like  when she was telling me all this...

I remember my mom saying they allowed smoking in rooms back then. Can you imagine the smell nonsmokers had to deal with
My Mom was put out for me and my brother. She did Lamaze for my sister, which was frowned upon by the nurses As was her breastfeeding all three of us.

My mom was put out for all of us.
They delivered twins (my sister & I) vaginally and we were both breech!
They put us all on formula even though they didn't have a pot to ..well you know. Breastfeeding was for the poor who couldn't afford formula. Formula companies advertised as being MORE nutritious for your baby.

My mom was put out for both of us as well. She just woke up later and was told what she had... both vaginally. Not sure how long she was in the hospital for.
And yes, we were not breastfed because the new "in" thing was formula and apparently my mother trusted her doctor/formula companies and thought it was more nutrious then as well
My cousin just delivered in Ireland and the experience of giving birth there and the hospital stay is soooo much better compared to here.

My bestfriends are fraternal twins.
When thier mom went unto labor in 1972 she pushed out the first one and then, and only then, the dr. informed her that thier was anothe baby that needed to be born. She had NO idea!
That's the day Tina & Lisa were born!
Can you imagine

When my mom had us...she had no idea she was having twins...until after I came out, and they saw the second baby (my sister). She only gained 13lbs with the both of us...her doctors rules were she was only allowed to gain 1/2 lb per week....and only smoke 1/2 pack of cigarettes PER DAY
Things sure were different

It is so amazing how things have changed!!! The only thing that I agree with is keeping the mother and baby in the hospital for longer than they do now.
My mother and aunts always told me how when they delivered, they were in the hospital for at least a week. Especially after having C-section, I think it is terrible to rush women out of the hospital in 2 or 3 days. I know it is nice to get home and be in your own bed, but it is such a major operation!
I don't think it would be bad to be under a doctors care and supervision for a few more days. And this way there are nurses to help take care of the baby and give you helpful advice for caring for your new baby, before pushing you out the door. It also gives the new mommy a chance to rest up before going home.
The smoking thing always amazes me!

I thought the same thing when my mom told me she was out when she delivered my baby. Your body will do a lot of the work naturally and good old forceps do the rest

my mom was put out for me as well and they told her what she had whenshe aoke and her best friend delivered a day before my mom and was smoking the whole time in the room and this was only in the 80's and it changed

I wondered this too, and I thought, FORCEPS.
