has anyone ever started their own business?
has it been successful? How did you start?
A good friend of mine & I want to start our own catering business...and we're just trying to get some ideas of how to start, etc.

I started my own business in December of last year --- but I already had the accounts, just had been doing it for someone else. Mine isn't the kind of biz. that you advertise.
You might want to check out this web site and also take an Adult Ed class on the technicalities...

I go by word of mouth from past customers, and I advertise on craigslist, weekly. I am going to also start advertising in the penny saver.

I started my own consulting business in January of this year. I landed 1 big client so far, and I have been working consistently here since then with no sight of ending in the future. I have had some other interest in smaller projects, but I haven't worked on any of them yet. I intend to do some marketing when I am finished here to get more business also.

I have a computer/networking consulting business - all word of mouth. Started in 1999 and its still growing.
