moms of 1 year olds - question
Anyone have a 12 month old who is not saying mamma or dada yet? Angela is not. I think she may say duck, dog, and light, but not for sure. I didn't think this was any big deal, but at her 1 year checkup today, the doctor started talking to us about early speech intervention, saying that if she isn't saying mama and dada in 4 weeks, we should call them. I was just wondering if she's the only one not saying these words....thanks.

Nick will be 1 on Saturday and he does not say Mama at all. He says Dada all of the time, however he does not say it to DH in particular - he just says it and I don't think he relates the word to his father. Other than that he does not say much - he tries to say Cat and that's it! I have his dr. appt. next week - I will ask then if this is a problem, but I don't think it is. I would not worry too much at this young age!

Emily says mostly dada. She'll be 13 months on the 12th. I am dada, daddy is dada, grandma is dada. Elmos is didi though. Lately she has been saying duckie. Momma comes out when I say it softly over and over again to her. She doesn't tend to use that word on her own.

Aidan is 15 months and to me, he still does not say it effectively.
He says the words but like you say, I do not think he thinks its me. He does not call to dada either.
He tries to say Milk, Elmo, Mouth - but actually they all sound the same.... like momo or muk.
At his 15 month appt the dr said he should know 4 words well by his next appt 18 month in Nov.
I talk to him all the time, we read. I think it will come to him in time. His comprehension is great, I am not worried.
He does "talk" with these full, loud, long outbursts full of expression and inflection and using his hands, like his is DEFINTELY saying something and he can't figure out why I am too stupid to understand him! 
ETA: I always forget something.... the other day at breakfast my DH was using these 1st words flash cards with him and he definitely said "baby" lound and clear... so we are getting there. Angela, Nick and Emily will too!

Marissa just turned a year old and she says mama and dada she knows mama is me but she will call my brothers dada and she will call my father dada so she doesn't really know that one yet. She just started saying up and no but its not very clear I just know what she is trying to say by her actions and everytime she wants up she does the same sound the same thing with no. I wouldn't really worry about it my girlfriend's daughter is 13 months and she really doesn't talk

Remember every baby is different. I would call for an evaluation, just to see as mentioned before it is free.

Here is the NY website for Early Intervention programs, it also has a little chart of achievements by age, not unlike what you would find in most parenting books AND of course each and every child is different. I really believe in most cases they just develop at their own paces. The same child could bypass one age group in some areas while average in others.

I also notice that in the 12 months speech area it says making mama/dada "sounds", to me that means as long as they are trying to master the words, making sounds is a start.
Then they have til 18 months to learn six words. My Ped is more conservative and would like to hear 4.

Ok.. at 2 years old.. I couldn't understand half the things outta my sons mouth... He did say a lot.. but he would try to form sentences, like grown up sentences.. and it was really mombo-jumbo... you could hear certain words.. but I thought he was never gonna break through.. Then I realized why.. my DH would respond when my son would point and go ah- or eh--... instead of saying what are you saying?, use your words, duck, door, toy, box... he would just grab it and give it to him...
He was extremely smart tho.. If I asked him to go and get the red ball, he understood perfectly, from about a year... I called a speech person and actually asked some girls on LIW, one womans mom worked with children and said as long as he had the comprehension level I described he would be fine.. most boys develop later than girls, but every child develops differently.. HTH

anthony will be 1 on the 27th and this is exactly what he does. he does say fish, jesus, and kitty. but mama is out and dada is just all day long but not at dh. i wouldnt worry.

I'm a speech pathologist who works with Early Intervention and Preschool age children. There is definitely a WIDE range of development among children. My niece is actually 15 months and I find that I watch her like a hawk!! She does not have any true words yet, but babbles and pretends to talk a lot. You'll want to listen to make sure they are making a variety of different sounds- usually vowels, and sounds such as p,b,m,t,d,n. (look for (mama, dada, baba, no, "du" for juice) As far as going for an evaluation, if your child does not have any comprehension difficulties (he/she can follow directions, point to body parts, give you something when you hold ourt your hand) and is only delayed expressively...it is safe to say they will not qualify that young. The expectations are not that high for a 15 month old and your child has to be significantly delayed to receive services. I would wait till between 18-24 months old. Most children I see for early intervention have just turned two. I should also add that the county does not really provide services for "speech sounds" before two and a half- three years old because many sounds need time to develop. I could go on and on and on....SORRY.
