Those of you who are house hunting, what 5 things are a must!
what are the 5 things that your new house MUST have?
for us:
1. at least 3 bedrooms
2. at least 1.5 baths
3. nice neighbrohood (no double yellow line)
4. garage
5. basement - HUGE plus!

Lots of wants, but in reality, we're willing to compromise for the "one"
1. 3 bedrooms
2. 1.5 baths
3. Great SD (won't compromise this)
4. Basement
5. Garage
(very similar to yours!)

it's a sad state of affairs when your wish list has to specify - at least 1.5 baths 
I never even knew they built ANY kind of house with only 1 bathroom!

For some reason a basement was more important to me than a garage. I wanted a yard for my dog...this was big.
Other important things
A porch...I was lucky with this one!
A third entrance (side door).
Nice neighborhood.

Almost the exact same, except maybe not the basement, would rather have a den. Also, we definatly want a yard for grilling, etc., even if its small. With the prices in hte NY area, you would think we wanted a mansion!!!

that was pretty much ours when we were looking. We ended up with:
1. 4 bedrooms (it's a cape)
2. 2-1/2 baths
3. nice nieghborhood with no double yello line
4. detached garage
5. crawl space  - this was our concession
*But what made up for the no basement was an 18x13 living room addition and separate laundry room.

WOW- I forgot houses even have basements- we don't have those where I live in Cali.
We wanted at least 3 bedrooms
a bath in the Master
decent backyard(which is more than 200 square ft where we live)
open kitchen
family room
2 car garage
On my wish list was also hardwood floors and
a fireplace
We ended up with 4 bedrooms and 2 baths
no master bath- there is a room for it but we have to put it in when we move in.
no hardwoods- tile all around but hardwood underneath. It looks really beachy and nice with the tile though so it will stay.

our WISH list
1. Waterfront with docking for the boat we don't own yet
2. at least 4 bedroom
3. at least a 2 car garage
4. At leat 2 full baths- 3 would be better
5. In groud pool- if the house doesn't already have one- I am not to put one in as per my DH
it's a long shot- but tha's why it's my wish list
unless I win the lotto- then it no problem

in move in condition more or less (meaning doesn't need $50K of work)

I have a limited price range especially for the area I want to live in but my original w/o a doubt need list even with that range was:
1) At least 3 bedrooms
2) at least 1 bathroom
3) Good Neighborhood
4) SD
5) ??
Just the basics that i told my re agent. Then one house we actually saw no kitchen. I couldn't believe it. So after that it was a joke we added kitchen to that list. I never knew there were houses out there with no kitchen and no space for it. I mean who actually lived there before?
But very high on my want list was large yard.
I ended up settling on a nice neighborhood, good sd, 3 bedrooms, 1.5 bath, tiny kitchen, 1.5 car garage, 4 car driveway, good size yard. What I compromise on was living space inside the home which now that I am in closing I keep thinking about and worrying. I'm going to have to build something.

I bumped a thread for you...these were my "5 musts"...notice how there are a ton more than 5, but that's 'cause I could be picky in GA. The ones with an -*- are my top 5.  Hope you get your LI dream house soon!! 
Price range: $125-250K
-*-Less than 10 minutes from main highway
Close to supermarkets & "civilization"
Small subdivision (no more than 50 houses) & no new phases being built
-*-House not on a main road; far from busy streets
45min to 1 hour max to Atlanta's "heart"
-*-Good schools (for my imaginary kids! LOL)
Physical:
Lot size: 1/2 acre or more
Not on corner
Level lot (absolutely no slopes)
-*-4 bedrooms min.
3 bathrooms min.
Fireplace
Jetted tub - Master Bath
Separate Shower - Master Bath
Toilet with door - Master Bath

As you know, we were extremely blessed and got everything on our list except for: "bonus room or in-law suite" but we have 4 bedrooms, so there's plenty of room. And it is on a corner, but that's actually a plus because it gave us 1/2 an acre. The Laundry Room is upstairs...but it's actually better that way because that's where the dirty clothes are.  Your house is out there...good luck!!

Location was not a worry as we were building on the lot we already had. So no worries of location.
I really didnt have a must have because we were having a house built. Things that were important to me when choosing our builder was:
time of construction
living room and family room
large master bathroom
what came included with the house
how many upgrades would we want.
When we went to contract with our builder we only had about 5 major upgrades. We upraded the cabinets, the carpet, the marble counter in the master bath, and added the lanai. Little upgrades we did was the tub (we had a jacuzzi tub put in), glass top stove, and an extra phone and cable jack set up.
Tile floors came with the house which is an upgrade with practically every other builder.

Well we're not in NY but our musts that we seem to have found is
1. 5 bedrooms
2. 2-3 bathrooms
3. basement, preferable finished
4. 3 car garage (we settled withouth this because it has a huge shed)
5. 1/4 acre of land or more (we're getting 1/3 acre)
