Getting stopped at the border...

SO, we are crossing the border from Canada back into the US...

The guard asks us the usual questions (where were you born, what did you do in Canada...), swipes our IDs, and then asks DH to turn off the ignition, unlock the doors, and hand him the keys Chat Icon

He didn't search the car, just opened up the back of the SUV, glanced inside and closed it and sent us on our merry way...

But, I was curious, does anyone know what would have happened if we actually had some illegal contraband in the car, say...Cuban cigars??? Chat Icon

Re: Getting stopped at the border...

They would take them. If it were a significant enough amount (or if the border patrol was in a p!ssy mood that day) they might request to *tag* your passport.

WOW thats scary! I dont know what they could have done to you....I havent been there since before 9/11 so I would imagine things are a little different now.

I remember the guard looking at my license and asking "Where is Bayside" like it was a fake town or something Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon since the rest of my friends had Rochester on their IDs.

Re: Getting stopped at the border...

if it was something ummm a bit more legal, you have to claim it.
my friends and i used to bring molson xxx home and when they asked what we had to claim we said 4 cases of molson xxx and 3 cartons of players....after that the guard would roll his eyes and wave us on. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My guess is you would be sitting in an office while they filed lots of paperwork. From our employees, I've heard they're pretty strict about that stuff (even though cigars aren't bomb making material).

Re: Getting stopped at the border...

they probably would have done a more extensive search and if they just found a quantity that seemed for "personal" use, they probably would have just confiscated them...

but finding any contraband is enough to search the rest of the vehicle.

Re: Getting stopped at the border...

They stopped me and mother coming back from Canada too and they looked in the trunk at the duty free bags we brought in...that was about it...

I know my brother once got pulled over and they did a complete check of the car...they had to get out, they looked everywhere (I guess he looked suspicious). They obviously didn't find anything but sent them on their way.

I think if they find anything like Cigars they confiscate them...I'm guessing if it was drugs or something, they'd arrest you.

I think in Canada the punishment is having to stand in the center of a hockey ring and cathc pucks in your mouth while the border patrol smokes your Cuban cigars.

One time while in college upstate my boyfriend and I went to Canada and on the way back the border guy asked us "how many guns do you have in the car? I dont think we look like terrorists but you never know.

Re: Getting stopped at the border...

Can I tell you something funny? During my 1st trip back from Canada, they asked us what we had to declare. I didn't know what the heck he was talking about so I said "Ummm, I declare that Canada is good??". The chick in the car next to me was in tears!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
