Positive for one gene on the CF Test

Hi,

Just wondering if any of you are going through what I am going through. I got my results yesterday for the CF test and I was shocked to find that I was a carrier for one of the genes that causes CF.....DH got his blood work done this morning and we are praying for a negative result from him.

Has anyone else on here gone through this. I am really upset about this and while DH is comforting he is always one who looks on the bright side and cannot really understand why I am so upset about this.
Am I nuts to be worrying?

Re: Positive for one gene on the CF Test

I was a wreck when I found out I was a carrier. Even after we consulted the genetic counselor and found out what we were up against, I was still a mess. It was one of the worst times in my life.

Bob came back negative as a carrier but the chances only go from 1/100, to 1/1000. So there's still a risk. I didn't opt for an amnio because no matter what was to be, I was going to have my baby.

Did you speak to a genetic counselor? They can give you some very useful information and let you know what your options are.

Good luck!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Positive for one gene on the CF Test

Thank you so much. I feel so much better that I Am not crazy for feeling so upset about this. My sister is telling me not to worry about and hasn't even asked me how I feel since I got the result!!

I thought if he was negative then there was no chance of the baby getting CF but only being a carrier too...........I thought you needed two carriers to produce a baby with a 1:4 chance of CF? But my mind is so blurry at the moment I really dont know what I read.

We havent seen a genetic counsellor as we wanted to wait to find out his results....so maybe we will then.

We wont be opting for an amnio either as the results arent going to change for this baby or the next.

Its such a huge shock to me. I consider myself to be extremely healthy and hardly ever even get a cold and I know this is genetic and there is nothing I can do about it but somehow it makes me so mad that I have it.

Thanks for listening.

Your baby is beautiful.

Re: Positive for one gene on the CF Test

I went through the same thing. I was supposed to have been tested to see if I was a CF carrier before I got pregnant, but I never did. We have a strong history of carriers in my family, as well as my cousin who had CF. Anyway, we both got tested after I became pregnant and stressed while waiting. I am a carrier and DH is not. I was also told that only two carriers can produce a child with CF.

Good luck with your results. I know exactly what you're feeling!

Re: Positive for one gene on the CF Test

My brother and SIL just went through this as well. My SIL tested positive (they already have one son but the dr never tested her for this when she was pregnant with him) but my brother tested negative. They were also told both needed to be carriers for the baby or my nephew to have CF. My nephew and the baby CAN be carriers though.

Good Luck!!

Re: Positive for one gene on the CF Test

Thanks for the support. I just re read some info and it does say that both parents have to be carriers in order for the baby to have the 1:4 of being born with CF.

I know it could be a carrier but can live with that.

Thanks a lot everyone and fingers crossed we get a negative next week...

Re: Positive for one gene on the CF Test

Both parents do have to be carriers... and even then, there's only a 1:4 chance the baby will have the disorder.

I haven't been through this myself (we did get genetic testing, but though DH tested positive for something, I tested negative for it). I do have a friend who got pregnant and then went through the genetic testing and it turned out that both she and her husband are carriers for Catavans - a genetic disorder that is common amongst jews. She had the most stressful pregnancy until she received the amnio results - NEGATIVE. She delivered a healthy beautiful boy in December... so even if you are both carriers, you can still deliver a healthy baby... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I also am a carrier for CF and Tach Sachs(sp?)
Thankfully, my husband is not and we had a healthy baby boy. I was freaking out too, we had to wait about a week for Rob's results to come back and that was very nerve wrecking. I was a wreck crying for no reason. Try to take it easy.

Re: Positive for one gene on the CF Test

I was a WRECK when I found out that I was a carrier. I wish that my doctor would've explained things better. He didn't mention that DH had to be a carrier too and even then there was a 1:4 chance of the baby having it. After a bunch of people told me this though, I calmed down quite a bit!

I am a carrier for tay sachs and one other disease common in the Jewish population. I was extremely upset when I found out, but luckily DH tested negative. As you can see, you are not alone - it is very common for someone to test positive for something, and it is totally normal to be worried and upset. Chat Icon
