Be very careful with getting cheap laptops, when components fail you can't replace them.
IBM stands alone in reliability, that's currently the only laptop I would buy, new or used.
Dells are also pretty decent - Avoid Compaq/HP/GateWay/Toshiba/Sony Vaio.
Goto www.google.com
Type in: Laptop brand, Model # and also the word 'Problems'.
Read all the reviews and then decide for yourself. Think about what components you want to add to the laptop, hardware...software etc.....

The software company I worked for switched from Dells to IBMs and now switched back because of the problems we've been having with the T41 model.
I would definitely stick with Dell. One thing you'd probably want as long as you're looking for a new one is a wireless modem card. Also decide what's more important to you a lighter weight laptop or a bigger screen.

DH bought me an Acer Asprire 3000 for Christmas and I love it. It is really nice and it is lighter than the Dells. It has one of those wide screens too.

I highly recommend the IBM T series laptops. My family has been using them for years and I think they are quite superior. I have the T42 and love it. Over the years we have had some others Compaqs, HP, and Dell. But the Thinkpad is the most reliable, but the price is a bit more. Otherwise my second choice would be a Dell.

I have the Dell Inspirion 6000. It has a wide screen...it's really a great computer...I love it.
But with Dell laptops you can almost always find coupons online. When I got mine I had a coupon $750 off of $1500!

I second the Apple recommendation.
I've had my Powerbook for almost 3 years now and I LOVE it.
I don't really ever have to worry about viruses and it does what I need it to do.
Even though it was expensive- I am very happy I bought it.
