I changed careers and got certified in math 7-12. I had a job the summer after I graduated, so yes, the market is slightly better for math & science teachers. It took a lot of time and effort to get that job.
I am going to strongly advise against skipping student teaching. I can't tell you how important that step is. Teaching is so different than what people "imagine" it to be. My first year was tough enough - I probably would not have made it without student teaching. Also, the odds of getting a paid teaching job when you aren't certified is very slim, as the new state regulations require a certain % of teachers in a district to be "highly qualified" - and with the glutton of teachers, I really can't see a district wanting to take on someone uncertified. Sorry.

The CST wasn't too bad - a lot of Math B and above, a few derivatives. Get the Barron's "Let's Review" series for A&B and you'll be fine!! I used just that and passed the first time.
Also - in case she doesn't see this, you might want to fm MrsTC. I believe she is going through a similar program.

I teach 7th grade math. It's tough, but I love it!!! Teaching really is awesome, but I do try to be realistic with people. Students today are nothing like we were!!
I have the TI-83plus, love it!!!

Karen is right, I am in a program in NJ called New Pathways to Teaching in NJ. What state are you in? My program has 2 stages. I did Stage I this summer. It was an intense course for lesson planning, researching, role playing etc and in classroom observations. I cannot enroll in Stage II until I get a full time teaching job. I haven't gotten one phone call from a district but have gotten a few from catholic schools. But yes, math and science do have an easier time finding jobs bc they are in high demand. My CE (certificate of eligibility) here in NJ is in elem. ed. which is the hardest to find a job in.
