FYI: Some countries have banned private cord blood banking and only allow public banking for many reasons.
These companies prey on PG women's emotions.
I did extensive research on this topic.
I'm curious to know why you're against it. Can you FM me?

I say call local oncologists, they will give you lots of insight and truly encourage you to bank cord blood. Stony Brook and North Shore Manhassett alone have had major success over the past 10 years with cord blood. I don't see how the companies prey on PG women's emotions since they are run by medical staff, not business men. Within the next 20 years we will see cord blood doing amazing things, it will be covered by ins. companies, will be more affordable, and will become regular practice. Lots of this info is not available to the public, so you can do extensive research but it will never provide you with all the facts. Most of the findings are "underwraps" and are disucssed by many medical communities within oncology and TBI academies. Believe me, cord blood should be highly encouraged, you should hear what is reported out at my tumor board meetings weekly at my hospital, you wouldn't think twice about banking. But, to each's own, I just coul not imagine NOT banking from all that I hear through out the oncology boards (and they have nothing to gain from their reports)

I just was trying to say that everyone should do their own research on the topic and try not to listen to what other people say because this topic is so heated and personal.
And studies do show that most Dr's will not use the cord blood banked because if needed for an illness or disease is already tainted with that illness or disease. There is an 88% chance that the cord blood banked in a public bank will match and will not be tainted.

Oh, I completely agree with you, I;m definitely not debating with you, i just know that on our own it is alwasy not easy to get the optimal info, if you;re not in the medical field you can get lost trying to find the info. It is definitely a personal choice. I just can't help but advocate "for it" since I personally know cases where a life was saved because of cord banking, and a life "may of been saved" but cord banking was not done.

The more research I did on the subject when first PG, the more I realized we NEEDED to do it.....to me, it was "added insurance" that God forbid anything happened down the road, this could be there to possibly help Emily.
My father died of Leukemia so that was a huge factor for us as well.
It wasn't cheap to bank the blood, but IMO well worth the money and added peace of mind. I think as the research continues, this will prove to be a very valuable resource for many medical conditions.
I think donating is a GREAT idea if you don't want to bank it yourself - I just wish it was easier to do and that drs spoke about it more to their patients.

I did alot of research on this subject too.Since we were delivering at Northshore-Manhasset, we donated it to their public bank..
This is a very personal decision, there is no right or wrong answer.

That's a shame in my opinion that OB's charge for this (and from what I hear they get paid big $$ for it) because it is virtually effortless on their end. It takes about an additional 2 minutes out of their time to stick the needle in the umbilical cord and most of them dump it on the nurse to package it up and collect mom's blood.

We used a public bank at LIJ and donated our cord blood. LIJ has a big program there now. What they do is take the placenta after you give birth and see if it's usable. If it is, they come to you and explain the program, take a vile of blood from you and swab the baby's cheek with a cotton swab. Then they have you sign a bunch of consent forms. If the cells from your cord blood are a match for someone who needs them, they will be given to that person. However, if God forbid, you need them one day and they are still available, you can get them back.

no we're not. Our family history doesn't warrant it.
I think public banking will be very common in the future. The cord blood cells are not specialized, and finding a match isn't that difficult. So we're donating it so that the cells can be utilized by someone who needs them. Should we (god forbid) ever need it, if our sample is still available, its ours to use. If not, they'll find us another match.
Seems like the best possible scenario for us.

I contacted Cyrobanks International, and they're sending me a collection kit that I have to bring with me to the hospital. The nurses/midwife will collect my blood and the cord blood sample, and then we notify Cyrobank to come pick it up.
Its pretty straightforward. I just filled out the forms to request my kit this week.

i think this is the key for many people...
over the weekend in our childbirth prep class a pamphlet was passed around that listed the diseases that cord blood could potentially help. since none of these run in our families, it gives us even more reason not to consider it at this point in time.

In the case of a donation or in general? My OB drew the cord blood both times. I mentioned above that her fee is $200 for this "procedure".
My OB also took care of the entire kit and also charged me a "collection fee for the procedure" of $200 - which the Dr later waived.

We wanted to do this too but our hospital doesn't do it. I've been meaning to call a public bank and see if they would come to the hospital and pick up the cord blood for their public bank after the baby is born. I hate to just throw it away and on the other hand, I felt the cons outweighed the pros as far as paying to bank the blood ourselves. I did a lot of reading up on this topic...so I feel comfortable in our decision.
