Man, 92, escapes major injury after train strikes car

I don't know how comfortable I am knowing that a 92 year old is still driving...

A 92-year-old man escaped serious injury after his car was trapped on a Long Island Railroad crossing in Malverne last night and was struck by a westbound train.

Edward Schwartz of Far Rockaway was taken to Winthrop University Hospital with minor injuries after the accident at 8:40 p.m. at Hempstead Avenue and Broadway, Nassau County police said.

Police said traffic was heavy when Schwartz drove his 1996 Toyota onto the tracks, and when the crossing gates lowered, Schwartz was trapped.

He tried without success to back the car off the tracks, but was sideswiped by a westbound equipment train, which pushed the car into a fence, police said. Members of the Malverne Fire Department were able to rescue Schartz.

LIRR service on the West Hempstead Branch was temporarily suspended Thursday night as a result of the accident

i was in a car accident a few yrs back and the man was 91 who hit my friends car...any1 that old has no right being on the road..just like there is a minimum age there should all be a maximum age to drive..

NY should require people to retake the raod test at a certain age. Remember just a few weeks ago that 79 yr. old man killed someone driving the wrong way on the Parkway!
