Why letting them grow up makes your heart ache

Today I picked my son up at preschool and on the ride home I asked him how school was and he told me that he played with 2 boys that were in his class last year. And then he said right after that "They didnt play with me. They hate me." I could feel my heart aching in that split second. Now I know that it doesnt necessarily mean they werent playing with him, they might have, might not have been since he's 4 years old, his interpretation of things is not always what it is but that was beside the point. Even if it wasnt the case, there will be some time in his life where someone wont play with him, will exclude him, maybe even...hate him. I dont want to put him out there in that world where not everyone loves him like we do. Knows how special and smart and fascinating he is... My heart just ached all day thinking about how even if it was just for a few minutes, he was excluded or thought he was excluded. I want to just wrap him back up in the family cocoon and call it a day. Now I have to get up tomorrow and send him back out into the cruel world again.

Joseph does the same thing. Then I ask if he's introduced himself & asks to play. He usually says "No, I'm too shy." Then I explain how were the boys supposed to know he wanted to play. I remind him when he was younger & used to grunt because he wanted something and to "use his words" next time.

Helps a bit, not always.

I know what you mean. Someday someone is going to break his little heart & I'm going to have to use every ounce of strength not to go push 5 year olds around on the playground on his behalf.

Believe me I know how you feel. This is why I have a hard time warming up to some of the neighbor kids. There are days they aren't so nice to my son. But, he thinks they are his best friends.Chat Icon

And boys unlike girls will fight one minute & be buddies for life the next. Only men understand this.

Re: Why letting them grow up makes your heart ache

This frightens and upsets me more than anything... I was teased a LOT growing up so I know firsthand how awful it can be and I just wish there was some way I could prevent that from every happening to my daughter Chat Icon

That was so sad to read, and it is so scary to know we have to let them go through these life experiences. I am dreading the day I have to deal with this.
