Edited - I think that is totally fine!!
I would just keep white and red wine at the tables, do the champagne toast and if anyone orders a drink then I would pick up the tab at the end - just don't offer anyone to get any alchoholic drinks..lol - because - sometimes people have a tendancy to go overboard and drink like there is no tomorrow at your expense. Who knows maybe people will not order any alcholohic drinks if they aren't offered to. I know I personally wouldn't order an alcoholic drink if i wasn't asked......

That's fine. My 30th was in the afternoon and only wine was served. My uncle wanted beer and offered to pay for it, but my FH wouldn't let him. My mom and grandma wound up having "real" drinks too, but that was only about 6-8 drinks total that he paid for.

honestly, and this is just my experience with my own family and my opinion...you really should give people options -- if money is the issue, then do a cash bar -- that's not the best solution either, but it's better than nothing.
OR
you could pay for a tab, like in other words, you pay for the bar bill up to a certain amount and then people pay for their own. But, IMO it looks kinda chincy if you don't provide options to those who may not drink wine.

I guess it's a difficult situation. We don't have a home big enough to host a "house party". If we did, we'd stock up on beer, vodkas, wine, etc.
But, wouldn't a "house party" (even with liqour) seem chincy compared to a party with wine only at a reception hall?
not at all -- we've been to plenty of b-day parties that were BBQ's or house parties

agreed, sometimes I think they're even more fun, they are much more relaxed.

plus, say you do it at a reception hall and you don't have liquor options available and someone asks for and gets denied a drink by the staff
