if anyone has had it done recently can you tell us who you used, and about how much it costs? we are dormering our house, and need to do the two floors. thanks

approximately 7K for a 13 seer unit... 14 vents, 2 story colonial. You probably won't need as many vents as we had two vaulted ceilings and they take two vents per room.

Did you have forced air heat? I heard iif you have forced air heat attaching a central air unit is less expensive???

We had it done last spring. We used Slomin's, it cost $10,000. We have a split house with 4 levels. I don't know the specific details about the unit or anything though. They had it done in 2 days and left no mess.

We used Burner King last year just to do the upstairs in our colonial. It cost $4,000.

We had it done last year...we had 2 zones put in, 1 for our new construction upstairs, and 1 for the main level of the house and basement. On the main level and basement, the duct work was already in place, that $3750. For the new construction upstairs (we dormered the top), there was no duct work, so that was $8800. The total after some additional fixes to upgrade some of the existing vents, the grand total of all the work was about 15K.

We have forced air heat and the ducts are already in place. I am in the process of getting 3 companies to give me estimates (I have a 2 level hi-ranch). I can post as I get them, I need to start making the calls!

No, we have oil heat. We did have to open two walls upstairs... actually one was in a gutted bathroom we were redoing anyway. The other room they just opened 4 square holes in the wall... about a 1' X 1' and put the ductwork through there. I was adamant about having it through the walls and NOT the closets as it wastes so much closet space. I also didn't want my hardwood floors to be disturbed.
We got it done in November and I don't think he does heating so it was his off season so the price was cheaper and my FIL is a kitchen contractor so I think he gave us a break if my FIL suggests him to clients. We have been working on this house for 4 months but should finally be moving in in two weeks

I know how you feel. We worked on ours for about two and a half months before we moved in. Just two more weeks!!! How exciting!!

Oh, I had several places tell me they would only put the ductwork through the closets and that they wouldn't go through the wall. that was the first question I asked them over the phone or, if I forgot, when they walked in the house. If they said they didn't I said, thank you but I know it CAN be done and I'm looking for a company that does it that way.
The problem with an undormered Cape cod is where to put the attic unit. That might be the issue.

Our house is a cape cod...but since we dormered the top floor, we got a second furnace/AC unit just for the upstairs. They built a closet for the furnace.
