Teachers! Parents! Behavior question for you.

I have a child in my class who is constantly testing. He tests and tests and has NO fear of authority. And he's 6. Chat Icon He smirks when he gets into trouble. Yet, his parents prefer to put the blame on me. Any suggestions. I tell him to stop, politely, at first, with a please. Then it becomes a demand. After 6 times of this, I raise my voice. I can ignore his behavior but that is almost like allowing him to get away with stuff I DON'T WANT in my classroom. My other children wouldn't DREAM of doing what he does. Any tips?

How about a positive reinforcement...??

Something you set up with him...something special..???

The positive thing is frustrating because just when I think, "yeah, I got him, this + thing works" he goes and does something wrong. I've talked and talked to him about this because I want to see what the source is. Doesn't work. I try to reinforce the good he's doing, but it's fruitless. Chat Icon

Re: Teachers! Parents! Behavior question for you.

What if you have him work towards something...like being teacher for an hour or something like that...

That way instead of rewarding the few times he is behaving...he's behaving good all the time to get what he wants...

Re: Teachers! Parents! Behavior question for you.

At my school the teachers have a stop sign in each room made of construction paper---everyone starts off on green. Then after a warning or two for some sort of inappropriate behavior they are moved to yellow if they continue bad behaviour ect then they are moved to red----each color carries certain consequences. Examples for yellow behavior is ---time off of recess or play time ect.....and then if they are on red it is loss of all recess/play time and a note home to parents and a trip to the principals office which ends up in them writing an apology note to the teacher for the bad behaviour.

Today when one of the first graders was acting up and after continual warnings, the teacher dropped him off in kindergarten for about 20 minutes and trust me that made him so embarresed and straightened him up really quickly.

Just some ideas
Good luck

How about removing him from the group or from the room even so he can see it is no fun not being in the class. If you stand near him does he still act up maybe your close proximity would help.

Re: Teachers! Parents! Behavior question for you.

Do you think that there may be other issues, outside the classroom that are going on?
Do you think this may be an ADD/ADHD thing?

I love that idea....but HATE....when a child is sent to a younger room as a punishment....

Ok granted...I taught pre-k..but I hated when a child was told he needed to go to the baby room...or was brought down to the baby room....To me that child isnt learning anything...

Re: Teachers! Parents! Behavior question for you.

Try using a behavior mod with him...
Positive reinforcement for good choices made, try shifting the focus to what he does well. See if he responds. I too have six year olds, one tests me a lot.

I agree with you that it is not the best to humiliate a child by making him or her feel less but sometimes it takes such extremes to really show a child that you mean business and there is a time for work and a time for play......in this particular situation it was definitly needed and worked

I've stood near him, I've been doing a weekly chart with him, discussing with him why certain behaviors are unacceptable, I've done so much, it's ridiculous. I don't think it is chemical. I have 2-3 on medication and how they are and how this boy is are so different. He KNOWS what he's doing and tries to see what he can get away with. His parents tell me that he just wants my attention. He'll take negative attention. But it's like my positive attention does nothing. It's almost like he THRIVES on getting into trouble.

Re: Teachers! Parents! Behavior question for you.

Im sorry I dont have any answers for you but as a parent, It always bothered me that there would be some troublemaker in the class and the the teacher would have to interupt MY child learning to keep disicplining the child.
I think its unfair to the rest of the class to have this go on..
Its not YOUR fault but I think the principle should call the parents in and have a meeting with them and tell them this can not continue to go on anymore..If it still doesnt stop the child should be removed from the classroom.
I know it sounds harsh but what about the other 20 kids in the class? Dont they deserve better?

Sorry for what your going through..
Good luck
