Cover letter info for a business??

I have been teaching since I left college and I would think the cover letter for teaching or a business is very different.

Can anyone help me with what to include in a business cover letter? Thanks so much!

I tell my students to follow this general format when writing a cover letter:

Paragraph 1: Introduction, what position you are applying for, and how you learned about the position

Paragraph 2: Explain why you are interested in the position and how you meet the companies needs. The way I explain it to my undergrads: think of the coverletter as the first email in match.com - you have your profile online, you get 2 emails - 1st guy writes all about himself, and it seems like he's probably sent the same e-mail to every girl he's attracted to; 2nd guy references things you say and demonstrates that he's the guy you are looking for by showing you have similar interests, etc. Which one would you reply to? Company info is so readily available on their web sites these days, that its easy to access.

Paragraph 3: State that you are interested in meeting for an interview, and how they can get into contact with you, or when you will be contacting them.

Other tips: try to find out who the cover letter should be addressed to rather than sending to Human Resources Professional or Sir/Madam.
