Telling people your baby's name a head of time...reactions?

My DH and I have a list of baby's names that we are considering. Whenever anyone asks us the names I'm always very vague and say we really haven't decided on anything yet because I am so sick of people's reactions.

I know that some names bother people for a multitude or reasons...especially if they knew someone with that name and that person bothered them but people don't make a face at me when someone shares a baby name with you!

Has anyone else run into this?

Grrr!

I get that w/ one of my girl name choices. Only a select few said they liked it. I just look at them & say "Whatever it's my kid I will name him/her what I want"

Re: Telling people your baby's name a head of time...reactions?

Yes!!! I hate to tell people...my SIL asked us about girls names and my DH told her "oh, we like Marcella" and she goes..."isn't that a chicken dish? Reminds me of chicken." I got so ******! I was like "that's Marsala (you idiot)"

My DH doesn't care what others think, but I always get annoyed. It's not like we ask people their oppinion!! They just give it!!

We like to keep it to ourselves for now.

If anyone asks, we just say we're not sure.

Well Im not PG (but trying!) and I made the mistake of telling someone my FAVORITE girls name - first and middle.

She turned around and named her daughter the EXACT same name! I was furious! Now I wont tell ANYONE.

Re: Telling people your baby's name a head of time...reactions?

I know exactly what you mean...before we decided the baby would be Ryan jr... I would say we are thinking of......(obviously ryan was one of the names we were thinking of) and to be honest nobody said anything until FSIL came home for the weekend...

When I told her...she ripped me apart telling me its horrible to name the baby after FH...I need to give my kid an identity..

She was so rude that when we decided on Ryan I didnt even tell her, and then @ memorial day BBQ a relative asked do we have a name yet... and we told them...she overheard (now hearing it was def. for the first time) and turned around and said "I need to go name shopping for my nephew..ehhh Im not gonna be buying this kid nothing."

OK well...when you have a baby you can go name shopping all you want sweetie...but my sons name will be Ryan(which means little king by the way...I esp. love it for the meaning) and dont buy him anything...it only makes you look stupid!

She was kidding...but its still rude...and Im still ******!

Its almost not worth telling anyone, because of how rude they can be.. but its hard to bottle up your joy...its so exciting...you just wanna tell everyone...

Yeah, I know all about it. If we have a girl her name will be Katherine Emer. Emer is an Irish name not really used in the US. People have literally laughed in our faces, said, "Thank God most people don't use their middle names," "Sounds like emu," etc, etc... Now we're intentionally vague and say the middle name is probably Eileen (it's not).

As for our boy's name if it's a boy...it's Conor and our last name is Italian. People blatantly say, "That doesn't go at all!!" Hey, my name is Erin--I guess THAT doesn't go either!

If I didn't like someone's choice, I would just keep it to myself!

The name I want is a very Irish name as well. And I'm getting all sorts of grief. Don't let it bother you. Emer is very popular in Ireland. And I agree why should you give up your nationality?

Re: Telling people your baby's name a head of time...reactions?

This has been such an issue with me. My DH and I are both totally split between 2 names (ie: we love both of them). When people drag the names out of me they immediately give me their opinion...NEVER ASKED!!!!!!!!!!!!! And now I tell people that I'm not telling because I'm not interested in opinions. But then I'll cave and tell them and most STILL give their opinion anyway! Serves me right I guess.

I think I am going to keep telling people we haven't decided because once when I was throwing out ideas about a name that I loved I got more opinions than I cared to hear.

Re: Telling people your baby's name a head of time...reactions?

The common response we get is "that's a nice name." Then most people ask why we chose it. I don't understand why there has to be a specific reason for choosing a name. We just like it.
