Wish me luck tomorrow- UPDATE ON BOTTOM

I'm telling my boss I'm pregnant!!

I'm going to start with saying I have some good news- I'm pregnant. Then all the chit chat- when are you due, was it a surprise, etc... When we start to discuss maternity leave I'll tell him I want 12 weeks paid (I don't expect to get it- but hey- if you never ask) and then I plan to come back full time. I will let him know that I will be available for heavy projects and emergencies and also to do some networking. I will also be available to work from home during that time. I will also let him know that I understand if they can't pay me the entire 12 weeks, but that is what I would like. I of course plan on coming back here full time after the maternity leave is over. I will re-emphasize that this is the place I see my career development and hope to become a partner at this firm and retire from here.

I know there is no set policy. There was once, but its been so long- the office manager said she forgot what it was.

I even thought about suggesting I can come back part time for 6 weeks if they give me a hard time about taking off 12. I know that this office is not making a lot of $$ and they pay me a good salary. Maybe it would be better for them if I were part time for the last 6 weeks or worked from home. There is not much to do here.

OK- so we started talking about work and how slow the office is and all the efforts I am making to bring in new clients... and then he got a phone call... so I'm still waiting...

Hey everyone. Thanks for your support.

So we had started a conversation about marketing. Some background- my firm started in Hartford 30 years ago by my boss. Last April (2004) we opened an office in NY. We are trying to build up a client base. We have gone from very busy to very slow (more slow). In fact, the firm split up over this office. One partner (boss's brother) wanted to close it. Boss didn't. so they split.

So we talked about marketing- then the phone rang. After the call I went back to my boss and told him I had some other news. I told him I was pregnant. He was very happy for me- but I think a little concerned. I told him that I fully plan to return to work full time and this has made me even more committed to networking and marketing the firm so that its strong when I get back. I told him I still plan to make ppartner and retire from this firm one day. He asked my how much time I wanted off and I told him 12 weeks. I told him during that time I will be available for work from home, legal research, and any meeting or such that would come up. I told him this may even be an opportuinty for one of the partners in CT who really wanted to NY office (he lives in Fairfield County) to start spending more time here and doing some networking (he has never been to this office!! Never!!).


We brainstormed for a while about different marketing approaches. He acknowledged that he has been to busy to any marketing and he needs to work on that. I left it reassuring him that I have my own motiviation for building up a client base- especially now. Job security is important to me and I know the more succesful the firm, the more security I have (and the faster I can be partner).

Overall it went well. Lets see what they offer me as for time off... hopefully I will get all 12 weeks!!!!

I'm glad it went well.
The only thing I can suggest though is to make it clear that you will not be available for the first 6-8 weeks. Honestly you really need time to rest, recover and get used to your baby and working from home really may not be as easy as you think.

OK- well her told me I can have the whole 12 weeks off, but he's not sure how much will be paid. I know the office manager told another attorney that it was 4 weeks.

I was wondering if I can recover disability for 6 weeks and then have their 4 weeks- I'll be in pretty good shape. I'll see what their answer is... and take it from there.

I am glad that it went well! Hopefully you'll get as much paid as possible! And 12 weeks is a very good maternity leave compaired to what a lot of people have so it's relaly great news!
