Any preschool teachers? Looking for advice...
(speaking of bragging...  )
My son will be 3 next month and I've enrolled him in preschool in the fall.  He's "academically advanced" for his age and I want to make sure I'm doing the "right" thing for him.
His speech therapist (who discharged him last month) suggested *not* sending him to "regular" preschool. What are my options, really?  Is a Montessori-type program that much more beneficial? I just don't want him to be bored and not enjoy the preschool experience.
Any advice is appreciated.

I would really research the Montessouri philosophy before considering it. It's not for every child.

That I know.  I'm curious what educators think about it. Feel free to expound.  Montessori isn't my only option, I was just using it as a reference.

Well, I teach at the elementary and middle school level, and I can tell you, in my experience, and this is just my opinion, that all of our students that we get from Montessouri schools have a hard time when then get older in a regular classroom setting. It always takes us a full year to get them to learn how to follow directions, participate with the group, etc. Where are you located? I can absolutely suggest a great pre-school program in Suffolk.

I am a preschool speech therapist in Commack. I happen to think my preschool is terrific, but I am biased My school is also a developmental preschool, so it would be an integrated setting, which some people are not fond of. Four of my cousins attended Montessori schools, two on LI and two in Massachusettes. I am not a big fan. The two that attended on LI are doing well, however the two in Mass struggled when they entered their private school. The private school wanted them evaluated for speech and occupational therapy because they thought they were behind. Maybe those are not activities they gravitated towards at Montessori...who knows. I happen to think that where I am the level is perfect for a three year old, because in the integrated class some of the children are turning 5, so they are exposed to older role models and more advanced activities. I think its important for your child to have many opportunities for socialization too, not all montessori schools support that strongly enough.

Thank you all for your input! I feel an integrated setting, particularly with older children might be more beneficial to my son than to be with his peers.
Does anyone know if I can have him tested for academics?

I love Montessori and have Molly in a program with a Montessori. It is really a person choice. I wish more schools would help children learn in their way..and not only based on a one-size fits all approach. I don't believe in standardized testing for young children either..as I was never a good test taker and often it really hurt my self-esteam and class placements...meanwhile I was bored in some classes. So different children learn differently and often public schools don't really bend to that at all. I think it is just a better way to learn..and again JMO.
I know at Molly's daycare/preschool her caregiver has had a few of the children in her class evulated so she is very aware of that stuff. The children have a special ed teacher come to the school to work privately with those kids- from the early intervention program. So I think it is partly parents and care givers working together to make sure that your child has what he/she needs.
I think you should look at all programs and see what works best for YOUR child.

Thanks Michele. I'm going to give this much more thought over the next few weeks. Is it possible that he would blame me for not getting into Harvard b/c I made a bad preschool choice?
