Computer Associates Question

A friend of mine is considering interviewing at Computer Associates...does anyone have anything to say about them (good or bad)?

Thanks!

Re: Computer Associates Question

I interned at a company that was acquired by CA. They offered me a position right out of college, but I turned it down. Everyone I had worked with hated it when they merged. Most have left by now. It could have changed, but they said they hated the environment there.

Re: Computer Associates Question

I've heard it's a sweatshop, they get a couple good years out of people knowing they'll burn out and leave. Turnover is pretty high from what I've heard from friends.

Re: Computer Associates Question

Theres a few girls on here who work there....They havent had any complaints.

My Ex worked there for about 8 years right aout of HS.

At first he complained about the money, it was very very low compared to other companies..but when he got raises they were BIG and eventually he made pretty decent money.

I have hear dit is a difficult place to work for on occasion.

BUT, that said, all places are in some aspect and CA offers great benefits and child care etc that I would think makes up for a lot.

Its also VERY dependant on what dept. you work in as there are soooo many. So each one is gonna have pro's and cons.

Do you know what dept? You may want to post it and then maybe the girls who work there can help you.

Re: Computer Associates Question

This is all very true, and more. But the benefits are great (on-site childcare, gym, etc.) and depending on what you do (sales, technical) you can get great experience with a world class organization, it just depends what your priorities and career goals are.

Re: Computer Associates Question

I worked there from 1998 through 2004.

Honestly in the beginning I loved it there. The money wasn't the best, but you knew eventually you would get a raise. They had great benefits - all medical was paid for - I think I had a $10 co-pay. They have a GREAT day care. They have 401K. Stock Options and stuff like that. I did hear that some of it has changed since I have worked there. I have a bunch of very close friends that are still there.

I used to work in the Billing Dept and worked my way up to a Supervisor in about 2 years. After becoming a supervisor and doing that for a while I thought it was time to move on. Well, I moved to the Quality Assurance Dept. That is where my time there basically s u cked. The took total advantage of me. I worked in that dept for a year and a half and then they laid me off a week before my wedding, with NO notice.

I guess it might depend on what you want to do. I am very undecided if I would ever go back. I did find out that the position I started with in the company now makes double of what I started with. Chat Icon

Re: Computer Associates Question

I think this would be in the legal department - or at least something like that if they dont have a legal dept.

Re: Computer Associates Question

My dad worked there for 17 years. He got laid off a few years ago when they let go 1000 LI workers.
He said there is a high turnover rate because it is very stressful.

They do have a legal dept - and from what I remember it was ok to work in there - not the greatest - they work you hard of course.
I can try to get more opinions on it, if you would like, even though my closest contacts are both out on maternity leave.

MrsJ - Are you looking for a job out here? I work in conjuction for a bunch of lawyers - I could fish around and see if anyone is looking.

ETA: I read your original post but want to keep the post up just in case you are interest.

Thank yuo for the offer Chat Icon But in my 'condition' - being 6 months pregnant, I dont think its a great time to switch jobs Chat Icon Although I am soooo sick of the city and the commute. I'm going to TRY and hang in here as long as I can before going on disability and have the baby. 107 days til my due date!

Just keep it in mind - I don't go out til the end of August so I could still feel around for you. It would most likely be in elder care law or estate law which you may not be interested in.
