Opinions Needed
Hi. My dh is in the process of buying another pizzeria and has an idea that I wanted to run by you all. He wants to offer ice cream during the summer, along with the regular italian ices. It is in a shopping center where there is not another ice cream store. If you go to a pizzeria would you think of getting ice cream? We were just having a discussion about this, because I wasn't too sure about the idea. Please let me know your HONEST opinions. Thanks!

I always go to pizza places for the best ice. They usually carry Ralphs... DH likes ice cream so much more then ice, so he would def buy.

The other thing I thought of is that we used to go to the pizzaria all the time as kids just for an ice in the summer time. If he is one of the only ones in the area selling ice cream in the summer, he might get some customer who come just for the ice cream.

Same here, I figure if I'm being "bad" by having pizza, I won't go for another fattening food afterwards. BUT if I had kids, I could see maybe getting it for them. Also, if its set up kind of like the Baskin Robbins and Dunkin' Donuts (or whatever that combo is) where it clearly offers both but people think of them separately, then they won't think of the store as pizza only.

I would probably only get ice cream in there if I was there for something else. I wouldn't go out of my way to get ice cream there.
Would he go for a pizzeria name that made it obvious he sold ice cream - there is a "slices and ices" right around here.

I dont think I would personally buy ice cream but IMO alot of teenagers hang in pizzerias so i would think that you could catch the business from that angle. Good Luck!

Hmm pizza and ice cream????? do you mean flavors like chocolate mint and stuff like that? like at baskin robbins and carvel? It seems weird, how about Gelato and Ices? to keep the "Italian" theme with a pizzeria.

By me there is a pizzaria that used to have a Baskin & Robbins next to them and when B&R went out they opened it as a Hershey's Ice Cream Parlor and broke through the wall so that it's 2 separate storefronts but you can get from one to the other. They both seem pretty busy most of the year.

ah yes the shopping center on wantagh ave by the library and post office. but they are 2 different stores, its separated.

I wouldn't do ice cream in a pizzaria.
But maybe he should sell more "upper class" deserts. Tiramisu, Mousse, etc.
Put them in a glass window where the customers can see. Yummy Yummy.

I don't really like ice cream, so I wouldn't. If I eat it once a year it's a lot and usually it would be with a hot brownie or something. I do love the ices though.

I dont think id buy ice cream there... but I LOVE the pizza place italain ices (what is the usual brand marios???)
To me....a good ice from a pizza place BLOWS ralphs outta the water... JMO

This doesn't seem weird to me because the most popular pizzaria/restaurant in my town has a whole ice cream/ices counter on the other side and it's always been hugely popular.

I agree that pizza & ice cream dont go together. I think ices & gelato would work well.
However, bottom line is if you're looking for ice cream & there is no where else, you'd opt for the only place that has it.

No, pizzerias are really only for Italian Ices. I would find it weird to have Ice Cream in a pizzeria... I'm definitely not sure about that idea.

I just wanted to thank everyone for your opinions. I thought that having ice cream might seem weird with pizza. I personally wouldnt mix the two. But I can see how some people may be in the mood for icecream and not pizza and may stop in. I will let my dh know what you all think. I guess it doesn't hurt to try! Thanks again.

i honestly think its a great idea. especially during the summer. i know me and my kids always like pizza and an ice during that time. i would definily go ahead with that plan.
