Spinoff to Godparent: for those who are catholic...
My husband's family is not catholic and we were going to choose one godparent from each side of the family. But I realized I don't know the requirements. Does the church require that the godparent be catholic and have received baptism, communion and confirmation?

It depends on the church. Some places are less stringent than others. My church will even allow you to have one non-Catholic Godparent. But my friend recently told me her church needs both godparents to be practicing Catholics, who go the church every week (with a notarized letter from their parish priest!), if married, they need to have been married in a Catholic church, stuff that not everyone may qualify for. It sounded quite strict. Definitely check with your church.

Definitely check with your church. We had a lot of problems with my daughters baptism. We finally wound up having her baptised in an Epscipalian church! Which we now love attending, even if I can't spell it

That's what I thought, but my niece is being christened this month and her godfather is JEWISH!!
My sister did go to her parish first and they wouldn't allow this, so she just found a church that would...so yeah, it depends on the church.

My husband's family is not Roman Catholic either. When Andrew was Baptized, the Church only said that one godparent must be Roman Catholic, so my sister fit that bill. It was fine to have the godfather be DH's brother, who is not Catholic.
Definitely check with your church.

I would say each church has different rules and some may be more lenient - strict than others... We are covered just in case, my sister and her DH are both devout Catholics

I had a problem with that too because I wanted my friend, whose Jewish, to be the godmother. The church said that was fine as long as there was a catholic godfather. They also didn't put her name on the certificate...but I didn't care...as long as she was able to be up there with us.
All churches aren't the same...

I had to bring a letter from my church saying that I was a parishoner when my niece was christened.
I think checking w/the church is the best bet.

It really depends on the church. Mine requires on Godparent to be a baptised Catholic the other a baptised Christian. Although they said you didn't need to bring any documentation though.

My church said the Godparents had to have done all 3
