Thoughts on the future of Joe Torre

I know a lot of people are calling for Torre to be fired, but it seems like people want someone to blame. There were high expectations especially since Detroit had a horrible record the last 2 months (and I think the Yankees had a great season record vs. Detroit), but I don't think the entire blame should be put on Torre. I think Detroit, especially the pitching staff, really stepped up to the plate, and I don't really see how that can be blamed on Torre.

Do you think he managed the series poorly?

Re: Thoughts on the future of Joe Torre

not sure if he managed the team poorly..

they certainly played poorly..

But i can't blame Torre of everything...
I think the entire Yankee organization is to blame...I haven't felt that they have made solid decisions in quite a while..

I highly doubt he will be fired though..

i voted undecided, i don't know enough about the story to vote yes or no.

if he was fired, i would say its only b/c the team as a whole has not played welll and steinbrenner wants someone to blame.

I think this is it for Torre. Although I dont think he is to blame at all basically, Steinbrenner will be typical "Steinbrenner" and like someone else said, look to put the blame on him.

We didnt play well. Plain and simple..most importantly, we didnt have the pitching. Torre cant control that. Although I do think he should have pulled Randy Johnson out sooner than he did. If Torre goes, it will definately be the end of an era. So sad.

Re: Thoughts on the future of Joe Torre

yeah, i think joe has seen his last day as the manager of the yanks

i do not think he will be fired though

what will likely happen is that, out of respect for what he has done, they will let him "resign" and go out on his own terms

in other words, he'll be fired, but not publically

it may not be fair and it may not be his fault, but traditionally, the blame ususally lies with the manager or the GM, no matter what

this was his 11th season and they haven't won in 5 years...george is going to make some drastic changes.

Re: Thoughts on the future of Joe Torre

I'm not a Torre fan, so I actually hope this is his last season

That is not to say I blame him for anything that transpired in the post season - in fact, I think he managed the team fine. They sucked, plain and simple - no amount of managing or coaching could have changed the end result, IMO

That said - I hope the Yankees majorly clean house in the off season and we come back to a DRASTICALLY new team. The Yanks have been stale for a few yrs now, we need a major shake up

I don't think it's his fault so much. I hate to agree with DH, but the Yankees are not a "team"...they're a bunch of over paid divas.

I say get rid of A-Rod and start buiding a team.

When we were winning BIG from 96 on the team was young, fresh, green, excited to play together. It was a team.

It was wrong to bring A-Rod in, that brought a lot of drama...and Sheffield...and Steinbrenner loves getting expensive players and getting rid of them the next season. One player doesn't make a difference, it's the team.

With that said, I think Torre did a great job with what he had.

Maybe they should get rid of Steinbrenner! Chat Icon I think he's everything that's wrong with baseball.

Re: Thoughts on the future of Joe Torre

I think it is Joe's time to go. I totally respect him as a manager and all he did for the Yanks but I think he style of managing and personality are no longer working. There is no drive and no energy on the team and although that is not all Torre's fault, I don't think he has the ability to inspire that anymore. I think the team needs a change and a new manager is one of the ways to do it.

That being said, I think we need to get rid of all the old, overpaid, apathetic players we have. (I know this is easier said then done because no one else is going to want them either for the amount of money they will cost!). As Eva Luna said, we won in the 90s with a young, fresh, green team. They weren't all the best and most paid players, but they wanted it and didn't believe they were entitled to it, As do many of todays players (and fans--but not us of course!).

My 2 cents!

Torre and A-rod need to go.

Torre did the best with what he had. They need new blood now.

A-Rod is a jinx to the team. Get rid of him and his huge contract and even bigger ego. Good riddens!

Re: Thoughts on the future of Joe Torre

I'm unsure at this point though I wouldn't be surprised if Torre weren't around for next season. However, if they get rid of Torre for Pinella, I think that is a HUGE mistake.

I agree with those who pointed out that they are truly a "team" - they haven't been in quite some time.

A-Rod, Sheffield, Johnson - I think that they absolutely NEED to go. They need some fresh (YOUNG) blood in there; has Steinbrenner paid any attention to the FARM system? Or is he too busy paying ridiculous sums to the 35+ guys in the league to even bother with building the system?

I totally agree with everything you posted.
Well said!

And I also agree with the ladies that said Pinella is NOT the answer - I wholeheartedly agree, he isn't the answer at all. I picture a guys like Pinella and I get flashbacks to the Billy Martin days, where there were firings every year (yeah I'm dating myself, I'm that old!) I could do without a hothead like Pinella in the dugout

I would love to see Joe Girardi as manager if I could pick someone right now - I think he is a very very smart man and would be a good fit , esp. if the team is newer and fresher (hopefully!) next year. I honestly can see a guy like Girardi pulling together a young club the way Willie Randolph has done with the Mets...

I love Torre and don't think he should be fired. there are so many things that went wrong the past couple of games and he can't be entirely to blame. He had a great season leading the team when nobody thought they had a chance with ShefF and Matsui out. I think he should stay.
I do agree with the posters that mentioned the team needs some younger players. I LOVE Cano and Cabrera. I think they have a lot of "spunk" and bring a lot to the team. The Yanks need more players like them.

Re: Thoughts on the future of Joe Torre

I don't think it was Torre's fault that they lost this year. He has one more year on his contract and I think he'll get his final year. If the bats go dead there's nothing he can do. That is not a managers fault. You can't have 9 guys who have all been all stars go almost 2 full games without a run. You can't blame Joe for the batters only making Bonderman throw 35 pitches in 5 innings. That's not his fault.

I do agree though that if George is going to fire him he'll let him resign instead of firing him.

Changes I see are trading Melky for a young pitcher. I don't like the move but I think that's going to happen. It's their only chance of getting a young hard thrower.

Does anyone know if Randy is in his final year?

Re: Thoughts on the future of Joe Torre

i agree with what people or saying

it's not his fault, he wasn't out there playing the games

but you still have to ask yourself why an all-star lineup plays well all season long and then fails to produce in the playoffs.

the blame has to lie somewhere.

Traditionally, whether it's his fault or not, it goes to the manager. The Captain usually takes the hit for his team.

I think Randy has one year left of his contract. Yesterday, some of the sportscasters said Sheffield will be out, Mussina may stay but at a lower salary and lower in the rotation, and Johnson will stay one more year (b/c of his contract). They also suggested that the Yankees should consider getting rid of A-Rod. I think if they find a way to get rid of him, it will involve the Yankees paying a significant chunk of A-Rod's salary.

Several commentators stated that Pinella is the best option out there. Why would many of you be upset if he replaced Torre?

I think that the yankees will return next year without Torre as a manager. I do not think it's Torre's fault that the Yankees didn't win. I have the upmost respect for Torre. He's a Great guy, but I do think the Yankees need a change.
Not just a change of manager but how about PITCHERS!!!
We need some good pitchers. Their relief pitchers sux!

I'm sad that the Yankees didn't win but they looked lost out there. They need to play as a team and get hits as a team.
I hope next year we go ALL the Way!!! Chat Icon

Piniella was the the manager from 1986-88. Yes, in '86 the Yanks finished second, but then they drop from there the following years. He is also a major hot head. Hiring him is just a step backward, IMO.

I'd prefer that they take a chance on Joe Girardi if they replace Torre.
