Star program
Does anyone know if I apply for star now, When will I start saving money on my taxes? My friend called yesterday and he claims they said the star will start for him in January 07....Is that possible or is he wrong?

I think he's probably right. We closed on our house last September. I think applications were accepetd after Oct? And the deadline was March of this year. So, I think our new taxes do not take effect until 2006.

Here's the county page on STAR. They aren't real clear on what year they start, it just says Jan 2.

I would apply now for it - just so you don't forget. You missed the deadline for this year, but you have until March (could vary slightly depnding on the town) to apply. STAR is based on your Township - not your County. The town is the governing body that collects your property taxes. So, you would bring the completed form to your town hall.
You'll see the benefit on your taxes next year - or on your June 2006 Tax bill - taxes are billed in December and June.

We got our form from the county and sent it into the Nassau County Assessors office. Is there another one for the town?

OK, I live in Suffolk, so it may be different for Nassau County Residents. It sounds like sending it to the county would be the correct thing to do then.

it does take awhile for Star to take effect....but apply right away.
we bought or house in Oct of last year and we had missed the cuttoff date for Jan 05...so ours will actuall start Jan 06
