How do you decide on what kind of take home outfit to bring with you?

I am confused about this especially when you don't know how big he is going to be? Do I bring a onesie with short sleeves or is a sleeper outfit with long sleeves and legs going to be too warm for him. And then what size do I bring some 0-3 sizes look small and some look big...

I bought a layette outfit in 0-3, with a matching blanket. It is a romper kind of thing, very girly, very comfy looking.

For my baby boy, I am bringing a long sleeve onesie with matching pants and a blanket.

Do you need an outfit that won't be snug? I thought you had to be careful of the umbilical cord stump?

You should avoid anything that snaps in front so it won't irritate the cord stump.

Isn't the cord stump covered by the diaper? So in other words a sleeper with snaps in the front is out? What about if I get one that fits loose?

the nurse in our childbirth prep class showed us how to diaper a newborn with the stump. she said to fold the diaper down so it does not touch it...

Re: How do you decide on what kind of take home outfit to bring with you?

I was just having the same discussion with FH. I bought a really cute comfy sleevless dress with matching hat and socks and he said its too much. So crazy me went out and bought 2 of the same outfits, one in newborn and one in 0-3. But this one is l/s and I am thinking it has snaps all down the frontChat Icon . Well I will take a pic and post it later to get some opinions. (not trying to take over the post - I just need help too)

for the first few weeks, they have those undershirts that only have a few snaps on the side, so you dont irritate the cord. but I put full outfits on my boys coming home, they were both cold weather.

Re: How do you decide on what kind of take home outfit to bring with you?

but sometimes I think the short shirts, etc. might make it worse, because hes not going to be standing straight where the shirt/pants wont touch and his umb cord wont be touched. in most cases he will be curled up sleeping no matter what, and usually have a little outfit on, or a light blanket in air conditioning, kwim? at least with a sleeper over the undershirt (instead of shirts and shorts) it will def be secure and clean, with a shirt/pants, it might be more exposed to stuff...
ahh, are we overthinknig this ? Chat Icon
with JOhn Anthony his cord fell off at the hospital, they had never seen it fall off so quick. Chat Icon

Re: How do you decide on what kind of take home outfit to bring with you?

Im having my baby early June and I have a one piece outfit with short sleeves and long legs. Socks, cap and cotton blanket. More than enough for him to get into and out of the car in comfort. I wouldnt personally go elaborate b/c if I just came from a womb where I was naked and comfy for 9 months, I wouldnt want to be buttoned and snapped into a big old outfit. 0-3m is fine for any baby except a preemie. My son was over 9 lbs and still a 0-3 was quite ample. I also think you are better off with a one piece that doesnt have elastic at the waist that can lean on or irritate the umbilical stump.
