From what I've heard excellent benefits, good job security. Otherwise it would depend on what job.

PrincessMarissa has a family of postmen (DH & dad).

Don't want to repeat what everyone else has said, but will add cons:

you have to work in ALL kinds of weather, which can be exhausting.

Dealing with dogs attacking or biting - it does happen.

Re: Thoughts on working for the Post Office!

I would say it depends too on what position. I worked there for a very short time- I forgot the exact title but I didn't have to go through civil service....it was basically temp rural route carrier (filling in for the regulars) I did the whole routine- sorting all mail to loading the truck and delivering for a 400 stop route.
just wasn't for me and it didn't help that I started right around the holidaysChat Icon

Pension is overrated; it's not that good. But health benefits are very good and if I remember correctly there is a decent match for the... can't think of it, not 401k or 403b, it's the gov't version of it, T someting p.

Yea- My DH, Dad, grandfather, 2 uncles.... Im surrounded by postal workers Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

All of my family is a supervisor or higher, and currently My DH is a city carrier but trying to get into the supervisor program.... those positions are 9-5 M-F and good $$$$

Currently My DH works 6 days a week- but thats because he is on the overtime list.. otherwise he would work 5 days a week... You dont always work weekends... Once you get a route... You would have off every Sunday.... and then one week MOn, next week tue, week after that Wed.. and so on...... Dh is offered SOOOOOOOOO much overtime in his office.... and makes wonderful $$$ because of that... (anything over 8hrs in a day is overtime- time-n-a-half, and any overtime over 10 hrs in a week (i think its 10) becomes double time.....

We've got great health benefits from him, pension. 401k, hes got alot of vacation, personal, and sick time...

Cons: Weather would be #1- can you picture walking in the rain we had on Saturday- while carrying a heavy mail bag?

In the beg. you start at the bottom of the list- so you do everyone else work- float around alot... and will even have to work a few Sundays....

Depending on the size of your office, wil depend on how soon you become a"regular" and get your own route....

Re: Thoughts on working for the Post Office!

My dad just retired from the post office in March. He loved being outdoors and getting paid to exercise. He hated the bad weather. He loved having a route in our neighborhood as he was able to keep an eye on things. He hated vicious dogs.

The one big thing my dad complained about was that the longer he was there, the more Big Brother-like they got. When he started he did his route and nobody bothered him. By time he retired, there were barcodes on the insides of some mailboxes and he had to scan them at certain times. They timed you doing your route and got really strict.

That was the big con that nobody else seems to have mentioned yet.
