Any Mom's Have Induction Tips/Stories to Share....

It looks like I am heading for an induction in the next few weeks. It wasn't what I planned but it's what best so I was wondering if anyone could share their experience with me. I realize not all induction stories are good.

Also the doc said they are looking for my cervix to soften on its own any tips on helping this along or is that not something you can help happen?

Yup, my midwife suggested it starting at 37/38 weeks to ripen it.

I tried the evening primrose oil also and it did nothing for me. I hope it works for you though.

My best induction advice though is consider the possibilities beforehand and try to decide what you will do if certain situations arise.

For example -

How long are you willing to wait to induce? (I recommend waiting as long as is possible and safe for you and the baby)

If your cervix doesn't ripen on it's own, how many doses of cervidil are you willing to go through? (Did you read my labor story? Chat Icon )

How will you handle pain relief if you can't have an epidural yet? Will you take demerol (I haven't heard one good story with demerol yet) or stadol (I had an okay experience with stadol).

How hard will you try for a vaginal birth? If labor stalls how quick will you be to okay a c-section? Sometimes these things are strictly up to the doctor, sometimes not. When it's up to you, it's good if you have an idea of what you want beforehand so that you are not caught completely off guard and have to make a decision when you are exhausted, emotional, and in pain.

Good luck - I wish you a smooth, quick, and easy induction and delivery!

Unfortunately I was induced and it ended in a c-section 21 hours later. I wasnt dilating enough and Alex's heatrate was decreasing.

Re: Any Mom's Have Induction Tips/Stories to Share....

i was induced 3 weeks early...
they had me go to the hospital at 4 PM
they put in a little pad to soften the cervix that night
and at 6 AM the next morning it was removed and they started me on the pitosin (sp). I was 100% dialated, they gave me an epidural (2 actually, the first one didnt take) and my son was born at 3 PM

The only thing I can say about induction (sorry I don't have any advice on the cervix softening) is if they give you pitocin, the pain goes from like zero to sixty in 2.5 seconds (alright, I'm exaggerating). But seriously it hit with a BAM and no amount of lamaze was going to help me cope with it. Stadol was alright until I hit 4 CM's but I had to have two rounds of EPI's to numb anything and the numbness freaked me out.

Let's just say I didn't find anything pleasant about the birthing process.

Be prepared for the unexpected. It's probably going to be the most intense experience of your life.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

This was my experience also. The combination of pitocin and having my water broken made the pain undescribable. Luckily I was able to get an epi shortly after and then all was good with the world.

I was not induced (no cervadil), but I did get pitocin, and I did not have a hard time with it at all - I had a great labor, and got the epidural shortly after I got to the hospital. Good luck to you!!!!

Re: Any Mom's Have Induction Tips/Stories to Share....

Sorry to say that my induction story is very different from everyone elses...I had GD and Pregnancy induced hypertension. and At 36 weeks my blood pressure spiked and I was started to show signs of Preeclampsia(sp), So i had a crazy week of being at the Dr . I went in on Fri for my regular checkup on be on the monutor.. and my Bp had spiked at 140/111. and my dr told me that i was going to the hospital NOw.. i was not anything dialed and my cervix was a hard as could be.. So i was a the hospital at 4 they started me on Mag sulfate to control my BP and then Postsion to start the contractions. They came on like a train wreck and then 6 hours later I had dialted just about 2 Cm so thye started my EPi and I just slept over night.. at 2 am I was 4cm and at 4 am I was 9cm and I gave birth at 6:37am.. my Dr was in shock I was a case study C section. He was just going to induce me untill the bext morning.. he kept saying it over and over again how shocked he was.....It actually was not as bad as I thought it was going to be...

Do not worry....

Thanks for that!!
I am hoping I get an induction date and don't have to be rushed into it but I realize with my BP it can happen at any time so I am trying to get prepared at home and do whatever I can to get my cervix even a little bit started.

So did you deliver at 36 weeks? Was the baby able to breathe on its own?

Re: Any Mom's Have Induction Tips/Stories to Share....

I was all prepared.. since I also had GD jillian was on the larger side.. so i was swinging on both sides.. Jillian was born screaming at 6lbs 14 oz at 36 weeks and 2 days..

If I went three more weeks she would have been a very big baby....

Just try to relax and just have your bag packed!!!

Re: Any Mom's Have Induction Tips/Stories to Share....

I was induced on my due date just because I didn't want to wait any longer. I went into the hospital at 7am ( I was 2 cm for about 2 weeks) started the pitosin at 9am. you do get contratcions very hard and fast after that. I am the biggest wimp with pain but I was able to hold out on the epi till 11:30pm. I tried to wait till 12pm for the epi but it just got too painful. but once I got it it was great. I went to sleep for 2 hours woke up at 3 10 cms. Started pushing then and my son was born at 5:17pm. they had to suction him out I was just too tired to push any longer. all and all my induction was very pleasant. good luck!

Just wanted to say that a study was published in the new england journal of medicine last winter that said that epidurals do NOT slow down labor -- they used to wait until after giving pitocin to do the epi because they didn't want to stall labor. My doctor felt strongly that I should get the epi BEFORE the pitocin. I did and had a very good experience. I also had 2 doses of cervidil to ripen the cervix and they didn't do much. The pitocin did the trick. I delivered 3 hours after starting it.

Re: Any Mom's Have Induction Tips/Stories to Share....

I was induced at almost 41 wks due to swelling and some minor signs of toxemia (although my urine and blood panel came back fine.) My OB would only consider induction if I made progress on my own or I was at complete risk.

I was admitted at 8PM, given cervidil to ripen the cervix. 12 hours later I was given pitocin and although the cervidil did start my own labor contractions, the pitocin never made it unbearable for me. I wasn't making much progress by 1-2PM that following day, so I was going to be taken off the pitocin and another cervidil was going to be inserted. Well, near the time they gave me too start making some progress, my water broke and that started real contractions to the point of pain! I was given an epi at 2.5 cms (because I was tired and in so much pain at that point) and I was dilated to 10 cm in less than 3 hours.

My epidural in no way slowed down my labor. If anything, I think it helped me relax and let everything happen.
