Christening gift etiquette- Godmother
Is there a gift that is supposed to be purchased by the godmother as per etiquette- such as the gown? I am not sure if I should be offering to purchase the gown or if I can just give my own personal gift such as a piece of jewelry and a bond or something along those lines . . .
anybody have an etiquette book they can check?

I think it depends on the family. In my family, the godmother buys the Christening gown but that could just be the way we do it...

I always thought the godmother bought the gown and the godfather the cross. Thats how we always have done it, and seen it done.

Ask the parent if she has a gown. Usually that is what you get, but if they have one, get a cross. I got one from Fortuneoff - very expensive though.

That is how I've always known it works. I do know some mothers that make gowns from special fabrics (like their wedding gowns) so maybe asking first would be good. See if she has something in mind first

This is the etiquette me and everyone I know has followed unless the outfit has been passed down then I would just buy a sedimental(sp) piece of jewelry.

In my family, the godmother always buys the gown, cross and a bond. The godfather usually does the Saint's name medal or ID bracelet and a bond.
The only outfit I didn't buy was DH's nephew's because my MIL bought it instead.

I would ask the mom. My godson had a gown that was a family heirloom and my friend has such picky taste that she didn't want anyone else buying the Christening outfit.
My sister didn't really have a special request for the Christening, but when my godson made his Communion, she asked if I would buy the communion set (prayer book, rosary beads, etc.)

I have 2 goddaughters and a god son. I bought the most beautiful gown for one goddaugher (sister's daughter). For the other, I *think* I bought the cross (they had a family gown they were using). For my godson, I think I bought the cross too.
But, I was very young for all 3 (14, 16, 17) so that might have affected the present I bought.

I've been a godmother twice
first time since it was my nephew
did the outfit, necklace (with cross) and matching bracelet
2nd time outfit, id bracelet and $$$

Traditionally in my family - godfathe the cross, godmother the outfit.
I was just a godmother to my niece and bought her outfit, gold bracelet and a savings bond. I went shopping with my SIL to pick out the outfit. I let her pick though and I just paid. My SIL did similar for my son. She bought him an outfit, a christening keepsake book and a savings bond.

good question.. i am the godmother to my niece.. my sister ws sgoing to take part of her wedding dress- the train part- to make the christening dress for isabella.... if thats the case, what the heck do I get then? I was going to give them money not a bond- do people do bonds anymore? i was told no..
question is
how much should i give?
what else should i get as far as a gift?
