Any 3rd/4th grade teachers out there?
My Landlord wants me to tutor her daughter 2x/week until school starts so I only have a few sessions to work with her.
She needs help with reading comprehension.
I have samples of ELA exams and some books to work with her on --- but was looking for other suggestions since I don't want to bore her.
Also can you give me a list of "must read" books for 4th grade?

When I taught 4th, my kids loved Judy Blume's books (Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing, Superfudge, etc.) and books by Dahl.

I'd find out what grade level she is reading on. You may want her to read books that are on her level, so you can work on comprehention, predictions, inferencing, etc. If the book is too difficult, she won't do well with this at all.

was going to say the same thing. find out what her reading level is- then work either on that level or 1 above it... u can even work with picture books.. thats what ive been doing w 1 of the kids I work with over the summer. i dont go by the reading lists bc many of those books can be too difficult for struggling readers.
w picture books- the language can be just as difficult or maybe even more so then some chapter books. people sometimes have a misconception that picture books are easy.... a lot have difficult language!!!
A chapter book she might enjoy that is funny is Judy Moody by Megan McDonald. this has become a series. She is a such funny character. i read this to my students in the third grade and they love it- both the boys and girls enjoyed it!
what you can do is a stop and jot on post its... read together discuss the story elements- and create a list of character traits (adjectives to describe characters) and proof from the story that supports the answer. Big time ELA questions (provide examples and details from the story)

Can you do a quick QRI on her so you have a clue regarding her reading level/ miscues/ etc...
From that info you will be able to get an independent and instructional reading level that will help you when you tutor.

Thanks so much guys!
I was even thinking of taking some characters from the story and having her create a problem or situation that they are having and then writing a script to go along with it. She would have to show an understanding of the character's traits and reactions to problems and then it would also reinforce her creative writing and on our last week we could "dress up" as the characters and act it out.
i just don't know if this would be too time consuming being that it will just be for a few weeks.

that sounds good but would probably be time consuming.
anything with writing would be beneficial. even if she wrote a paragraph or a journal entry pretending to be the character OR what whse would do if she was inthe characters shoes... that is good too.
with the writing, I focus on
restating the questions making sure it makes sense
make sure the question is actually ANSWERED (no fluff)
make sure examples from story are given
conclusion sentence
use voice
punctuation and capitals

Many 4th graders have a difficult time with the listening portion of the ELA. So picking books that aren't necessarily on her independent reading level, but on her listening level that you can read aloud to her for a few minutes each session may help her with the listening comprehension a bit (try stop and say something method every few pages, to help her stay with it and follow through).
