If you are applying for other jobs, do you tell your boss?

Next week I have a second interview for a position I applied for. It's in the same industry as I work now, and my boss used to work there. The first interview was over the phone, so I did not have to ask for time off, etc. This second interview is in person. I don't want to make up a lie about why I need a couple hours off, only to have someone from that organization tell my boss I was there interviewing. I know they usually keep it confidential, but you never know who finds out, etc.

I am not sure if I should just be honest and upfront, or lie and keep it from her until I decide if I want it or get the offer? Chat Icon

Don't say anything. Just say you need to take some personal time for a couple of hours. If you decide to take the job then give them notice.

Thanks, I'm just afraid she'll hear I was there interviewing. Chat Icon They've always been good to me here, so I was thinking maybe I should just be upfront.

I know where you are coming from, but you need to do what's right for you. Hopefully the potential employer will know your situation and will keep quiet.

You say they have been loyal to you.... but you are looking for another job. Thats very contradicting.

Just tell them you need personal time. If they have been loyal to you... when you are ready to leave... give them plenty of notice (2-3 weeks minimum).

Everyone looks for new jobs in their lives. Employers know this.

Telling them in advance you are looking for a job will only damage your status there. Don't do it.

It's not contradictory--the new job is much more money. I have no problems with my current job, but the money would be nice. Loyalty can only take you so far.

I will ask for the personal time and not tell them yet. If you get the job, give them plenty of notice time. If you don't get the job, and you tell them, they might think you are not happy there and it can become uncomfortable.

I think if you are close with your boss than I would say something but if not I would not say a word. I would just say that you have a doctor's appointment or something and you will be in late or have to leave early depending on what time your interview is.

Don't say anything. I'm in your shoes, exactly. And I thought about it like this:

The new place won't say anything because, if for no other reason, it will make THEM look bad for considering you, knowing that you work for a former colleague.

If you tell your boss you are looking, it gives her reason to fire you...why should she pay someone who she knows for a fact is leaving? As things stand now, you don't NEED (I'm assuming) a job because you've already got one...you just WANT one.
