What did you do on your first day of work?

I started working on my first day.... no training on ANYTHING!

I have 2 new people starting tomorrow so this is on my mind tonight.

You can give them background documents to read, show them around the office, take them out for a welcome lunch and invite them to any relevant meetings for them to listen in.

Also-- review a current status report so that they can get up to speed of any current projects and point them in the direction of files and docs that they will need to become familiar with as they relate to the current projects.

My office had a welcome breakfast and I was introduced around and given a tour of the office area, then I had short meetings with many of the people in the office so they could tell me about their responsibilities.

I had a new girl last week. I gave her a tour and introduced her to everybody, then sat with her all day and showed her all the forms and procedures we use. Her second day she sat in on a meeting and I worked in the lab along with her for the rest of the week.

Tomorrow I have 2 more but I am VERY BUSY this week, so I can't really sit with them or spend every second with them. I was thinking of the tour in the morning and then having them fill out their ppw for HR and read SOPs for the rest of the day, amybe browse thru the intranet. Is that too boring?

it's been a VERY long time since I started a new job (11 yrs to be exact), but I remember going to orientation which took several hours. I also had to fill out a lot of health insurance forms, etc. we were taken out to lunch which I thought was very nice! and then ended the day by sitting with my new co-workers and starting to observe.

my first day was just an introduction to the people that i work with
getting to know my clients

nothing all that heavy at all

in fact nothing all that heavy for the first week other than observing others

I wouldn't worry about them being bored-- no one expects to start a job and have a ton of things to do-- you expect to ease into it.

I think the tour is a good idea. I have had a job where I wasn't introduced to anyone and it was very uncomfortable.

I think your plan sounds like a good one. You can spend more time with them when you have time to do it.
