NYC teachers-extended day...

i was wondering how this 3:17 1/2 extended day is going for you and how your school does it??

My school is doing things so azz backwards. dismissal is at 2:40 (which out of my 27 children only 3 get dismissed) i have to wait for an outer school classroom teacher to come to my room so i can dismiss them. He shows up at 2:45 bc he has a class. Then by the time i dismiss those kids and get back its 2:55. Meanwhile during that time kids are switching classes and i end up with 8 children. I cant even get through a math problem bc we start packing them up at 3:10 and then dismissing. IT NUTS!!!!

All my preps got switched, so I all hear is "when do we go to gym???" Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Otherwise, it's going pretty smooth. We start bussing at 2:20 and dismiss walkers by 2:40 and we're back at the room by 2:45. I dismiss walkers with my group (I have my own kids) and then we walk back to the room together.

ETA: I just hope the doe doesn't start putting all sorts of mandates on this time too. My kids (I teach 1st) are really happy to stay with me, which is a good feeling, too! Chat Icon

Re: NYC teachers-extended day...

It is a nightmare at the high school level. The Mandated students just leave after 9th period. Then you have to chase students down the hall, and they know we can't make them stay so they break out. I don't blame them at all. It is such a long day as it is! This should have started in September and not in the middle of the year, or make it optional "Office Hours" for teachers and students. Whoever shows up for tutoring, you work with them.

My school has so many programs as it it. Twilight school for credit, 10 Saturdays before exams for Regents, after the 37.5 minutes tutoring, I mean how much more can the teachers give and have hardly any students to show.

Re: NYC teachers-extended day...

We have a lot of SES programs too- BELL, Children's Aid Society, Project SCALE. And most of those kids are not mandated so they have to hang out till we are done with the 37.5 minutes.

I have been out of the building scoring the ELA. Meanwhile, my poor students are being shuffled around and I have yet to teach them once.

I knew the HS kids would take off- they are going to have a hard time enforcing the mandate. After the bus chaos this week I saw a mom on the news who said her child would not attend, and I don't blame her one bit. Her son didn't get home till 7 or 8 pm because of the bus glitches.

My bet is that the time will be folded into the regular day next year.

Re: NYC teachers-extended day...

My non-mandated kids dismiss at 2:35, if their parents are late(I teach 1st grade) a Para comes to my room to take the late pick-ups to a "holding area". I then have 6 kids I send to a colleague's room, and 6 that stay with me. We get started about 2:45-2:50. I actually like working with them in such a small setting, it goes by very quickly. It's the dimissal at 3:17(and a halfChat Icon ) that needs work. We simply do not have enough personnel to stay with the children whose parents don't pick them up on time. We are supposed to be gone at 3:17, and I haven't been leaving until at least 3:25. This is something my school is working on, and will be resolved, quickly.

Other than that, I really don't mind it.Chat Icon

Re: NYC teachers-extended day...

I don't mind working with the students for the extra time. The problem that we are facing is a 200 lb 6 ft student who says "How are you going to make me stay?"

We tried to program the students with their 9th period teacher so that they don;t even have to leave the room, but they still get up and leave. I would really prefer that the time just be spread throughout the day!

Let's see what happens!
