What Is Your Favorite Ethnic Dish/Food?

For those of us that have parents or grandparents that were born in other countries, what is your favorite dish from "home"?

It's simple but tomato sauce - my nonna (mom's mother) made the best that I've had in my life.

My nonna on Dad's side (from Sicily) made this dish - it was pasta with bread crumbs and anchovies. Sounds weird, but I loved it.

I cant get enough of my mom's rellenitos. It consists of fried mashed sweet plantain with a gooey center of black bean paste sweetened with cinnamon and sugar. Sounds nasty, but they are to die for! Chat Icon

My grandmother made this dish too. I didn't like the anchovies part, but it was something only SHE could make 'just right' .. Chat Icon Everyone misses it now !

I will not eat anchovies in anything ever but when she made that, I ate it up. My mom said she'd try to make it but I teased her that being from just outside of Naples, she might not get it right like the Sicilians do. Chat Icon

Re: What Is Your Favorite Ethnic Dish/Food?

There are so many fabulous Italian dishes that both my grandmothers used to make, I would be here all day

But my grandmother's stuffed artichokes were by and large the best I EVER had. My Mom and aunts try to duplicate it but it's never ever the same way she made them!

Now that I'm married to a Greek boy, my favorite Greek dish is Pastiso (I might be spelling it wrong). Its like a Greek lasagna or baked ziti, except you use a creamy type of base to mix in instead of tomato sauce. I cannot even describe it but its HEAVEN on a plate Chat Icon

Re: What Is Your Favorite Ethnic Dish/Food?

Can I adopt someone else's ethnic foods?

I LOVE homemade lumpia, pupusas and tamales.

I once worked in a school that had mostly philipino and latino students. Once a year we had a cultural fair and I would hoover their mom's homemade stuff! Chat Icon

You might find this site useful: The Gaijin Girl's Guide

none of the restaurants are as good as my mom's stuff, but it eases the craving.

Re: What Is Your Favorite Ethnic Dish/Food?

DH's grandmother is from Russia. She makes these amazing little pancakes filled with spinach and pine nuts. DH's mom does a lot of Lebanese/Middle Eastern cooking, which is amazing. I particularly like her homemade hummus.
