should I allow my 8yr old to see Star Wars......with poll

My 8 yr old daughter has seen every Star Wars except the new one and I promised to take her when it came out. Then I heard that there was a lot of violence and someone gets decappitated.
All her friends are going and one of her friends saw it already.
Her friends father went at midnight last night and said it wasnt that bad and for me to just let her go.
what should I do???

Re: should I allow my 8yr old to see Star Wars......with poll

Let me tell you guys...my 7 year old son is dying to see it. He's seen all the others. Dh went last night to see it (because he wanted to and also to see if it was OK for my son to see) and he said that it is in no way a kids movie.
He's pretty easy with that stuff too. My son has seen a couple of PG-13 movies, like The Hulk and Spiderman 2, but DH said this one is just not appropriate.

OH NO!!! Really? how bad was it, my son is 7 also and he is begging to see it, I had no idea something would be wrong with it!

I didn't really get the details from him about the specifics, but I will find out.
I know they were discussing it in the paper a day or 2 ago and they said definately not appropriate for a child under 13, but I was really hoping my son could see it still. They had mentioned something about children being killed, and that although you don't really see it happening, you see the bodies of the children afterwards. I think I'm going to wait on this one though.

Re: should I allow my 8yr old to see Star Wars......with poll

I saw it last night as well and I definitely - IMO - do not think it is appropriate for a child under the age of 13.

It is very aggressive and violent - and while you never see any blood it can still be disturbing for a young child.

SPOILER >>>

Among other things, younglings (young Jedi in training) are killed...Amidala dies giving birth...

I have an 8 year old too, and he's dying to see it, we watched all the other ones together so he's all ready, they say it's a little more "graphic" then the last ones but I'm still going to take him!

That's what DH said too "Disturbing". And like I said, he's pretty easy with stuff like that.

Re: should I allow my 8yr old to see Star Wars......with poll

I saw this on Wednesday and I don't know if I would want my child to watch this movie. This was probably the most violent of the three prequels. There are very brutal scenes where Anakin goes on a killing rampage, not to mention the gory result of Anakin and ObiWan's final battle. I love Star Wars and I'm a grown woman, but parts from that last scene gave me chills and would really scare me if I was a kid. I don't know if I would let my kids see it, it's hard especially if they love the story and really want to see this last movie.... I guess it depends on your own child and what you think they are capable of handling without becoming frightened.

I read somewhere that even George Lucas said that this is NOT a movie for kids!

I heard that too - actually, wasn't this the only Star Wars movie to get the PG13 rating?

Tha's just wrong. I know they had a story to tell, but it should fit in with all the other movies. I feel bad for all the kids that saw all the other ones & want to see this one, but I understand not lettign 7-9 year old kids see it. My mom was really strict with movies untill I was a teenager.

ETA- I dont'have kids &I haven't seen the movie, but if you are unsure , say no. She can always see it on DVD eventually. If you say yes & it is too violent it will be worse than saying no.

Re: should I allow my 8yr old to see Star Wars......with poll

I have to agree, for the younger fans it really does stink. If I was a 7 year old who loved SW and was told "sorry, this is a grown up movie now and you can't see it" I'd be really upset and disappointed. But seeing it myself, I understand the warning and I would not want my young child watching it, no matter how much they loved Star Wars. I think Lucas really pulled all the punches on this one - he had a lot to make up for with the not-so-spectacular Episodes I and II, so he might have gone a little overboard on the violence here. Not in a bad way, but this movie also is the final story, how everything comes together, so it was bound to have more action/violence than the first two.

my dh also saw it with his friends (guys day out!) and although we don't have kids nor do any of the guys he was with, i asked them if they thought kids should see it and they all said no!, which is interesting considering none (with the exception of my dh) are even thinking on a kid's level by any means (think bachelor types who are not too familiar with kids)....it stinks b/c there's so many kids out there who want to see it, but it sounds like it not be good for them!
