Around 22-23 weeks the ears are formed enough that the baby can begin to hear you and loud noises.  I started getting DH in the habit of not cursing already...started this week. Its already started working because he is much more aware of what he is saying.
They may also jump or squint at loud noises that can startle them.

I have been pretty good with my cursing. It's my husbad that sometimes goes out of control. As a matter of fact I am going to tell him tonight that they can hear our voices now.

Ill never forget...I was about 28 weeks preg. and I was putting a plate in the cabinet and dropped it...it of course made a loud smashing sound...
Ryan made such a leap in there...I thought he was gonna come out me throat!

Aww poor baby got scared!
My little one moves around a lot with all the noises on the city streets.

I just read today that the baby starts detecting sound outside the womb at 16 weeks, it's just that it all sounds the same to them. They just know it's sound.

There is some info on this on the show In the Womb. It is on Discovery or something like that and if you are pregnant I would suggest watching this. It is so informative. If you have Tivo you can do a search for it it is on every couple of weeks
