Why is summer camp so expensive
I'm trying to find a summer camp for the 4 weeks in August for my step-daughter (she's 10). Everything is between 2-3K 
We are in NJ, but are the prices similar on LI?

Are you looking for sleep away or Day camp? Try your local Y - they often run day camps for much cheaper than standard camps or they can refer you.

Day camp...I can't imagine what sleep-away camp would cost

Growing up in NJ I always did the Y camps or our church camps (we didn't go to church much, but always did the camp). I also did a sleep away 4-H camp in NJ when I was 10 for a week. It was a nice introduction to sleep away without being away long.

2-3K for DAY CAMP!?!?!?
OMG...That's how much my parents paid to send me to sleepaway camp, which included a college course. Holy moly!
try a relgious organization camp!

It's $325 for 5 days of sleep away. I think it's a great thing to supplement a day camp...I had a great time.

Thanks...we don't have a church (we're Jewish and we don't have a temple either  ). We already checked out the local Y camp...but DH didn't like the area that it was in....

It is crazy. We camp out over night to get my daughter into our town camp which is $720 for 4 sessions (8 weeks). It is the cheapest around.

I was going to suggest this too.
My sister has also put her kids in a Town-sponsored program, but I think it is only a week or two.

Thanks everyone. I will check out the Girl Scouts.
The problem with our town camp is it's for the first 7 weeks of the summer...and she usually visits her grandparents in Florida. But...when we sent her last year after camp was over, the IL's aren't able to entertain her 24 hours a day. And the camp down in Florida is already over by the time she got there (the previous year, she went to camp while in Florida). Anyway...will do more research. Thanks ladies.
