OBGYN Recommendations

I live in Commack and am trying to decide whether I should go with Huntington Hospital or Stonybrook. Which one do you ladies think is better? And do you have any recommendations for OBGYNs that are affiliated with either of these hospitals? Many thanks!

I don't know anything about Huntington hospital, so I will not say anything for or against it.

I am scheduled to deliver my second at Stony Brook, and I'm using the midwives that are part of the University Associates practice. They have a group of regular OB's and also high risk OB's in the same facility in East Setauket. You might want to consider them.

One of my reasons for choosing Stony Brook is for the Level 3 NICU. I just wanted to be on the safe side...god forbid the baby needs special care, I didn't want to end up in a different hospital than the baby! It might be overly cautious to think that way, but that's just me I guess.

I would rely more on the DR . If you have a GOOD Dr, then the hospital really in my opinion is that THAT important.
I say this because I had a HORRIBLE experience with STony Brook, BUT it was the Dr's I saw there more then the rest of the staff that caused my problems. I had prob's with the NICU as well.

BUT I have a friend who delivered a pre-term baby at Stony Brook and she recieved the best quality care.

I just want to clarify that I used when PG the dr's at Stoneybrook OBGYN located within the Hospital and a satellite location in Setauket.

I have heard great things about them but not my own experience.

I did not like the SB OBGYN Emergency room.

I had a high risk PG and visited the Labor and Delivery ER about 15 times.

I had a nurse ask me once " you cant possibly be here again" ..with a snicker??? ( I was 3 cm's dialtated at 21 weeks , that was my reason)

I was misdiagnosed two times...

I had an infected IV that fell OUT of my arm and the night nurse called my Dr. and said " she pulled her IV out" because I guess she was afraid to get in trouble for ignoring the fact it was infected?

Since its a teaching hospital during a stay I had 18 people come in to watch the dr. examine me, and when he asked how I was I said kinda $hitty...OBVIOUSLY..Im in a hospital BED...The Dr. said ...well maybe a more positive attitude would have prevented this???????

I had a L&B aide who came to get me in a wheelchair after delivery and loss of my daughter tell me not to eat my tray of food because it looked like my MOTHER was tired and needed it more? AND that I was young and it was probably foolish to have gotten PG in the first place )

side note- I actually attempted to punch that aide( hormones? ) and had a meeting with the hospital director to discuss the issues I had with the hospital. I also investigated sueing them for issues I had.

It was a nightmare.

I do NOT want to scare anyone. This was 7 years ago and major improvements have been made, but I still believe SB has a long way to come as far as patient care goes.

THIS IS JUST my opinion again, and I dont doubt there are some great dr's/staff and experiences at SB, but I will tell my story anyway because I cant reccomend them as a hospital.

Donna, I'm very sorry for the gross mistreatment you received. It is awful, and there are no excuses for it.

However, I don't think Stony Brook is alone in these issues. Any hospital can find themselves with staff members that are insensitive assholes. It is unfortunate that you had to experience so many of them at once.

Also, WRT to it being a teaching facility...as a patient, you absolutely have every right to REFUSE to have students involved in your care. I'm not sure if you are (or were) aware of that at the time of your experience. You have rights as a patient in ANY facility!

So far, I've had nothing but good experiences there...both with my chosen caregivers (midwives) and the hospital staff, since I did have go to L&D for 4 hours of monitoring b/c of spotting and some mild contractions.

Hopefully, my birth experience will be a wonderful one. But I'm afraid there are just no guarantees, no matter which hospital I choose. I have faith in the midwives and hopefully they will help see me through.

I really liked Dr Birnbaum in Smithtown, but he's affiliated with St Catherine's.

I was a patient at STony Brook for gallbladder surgery and it was terrible, but it wasn't great either. I went in on a friday, took forever to get out on SAt.

I go to Contemporary Women's Care in the medical building right next to St. Catherines. All 3 doctors are phenomenal - they were so fabulous with my first pregnancy and continue to be that way with my second.

I delivered at St. Catherines and had no problems - I actually had a good experience there. The nurses were fabulous and very attentive.

I use Dr.Scanlon who is associated with Huntington Hospital.

He is part of the North Shore Medical Group located on New York Ave (just behind the hospital). There are 3 other women in the practice as well.

I was seen by all 4 Drs and all 4 were excellent (I was in the office every other day the last few weeks and was sent to the hospital 3 times).

Dr. Scanlon was actually in Africa when my baby was born (I ended up going in early), so a different Dr. performed the delivery.

I had a great experience at Huntington, plus you get a lobster/steak dinner before you go home :)

I live in commack too...I delivered my first last Sept. and had a great exp. at Huntington Hospital. My obgyn group is WGM in e. northport and they also have a second office in Huntington.
I am about 6 weeks pregnant with my second and will definately go back to Huntington!

I had a great experience with Huntington Hospital (not such a great experience with my labor, but that was ME, not the hospital). I can't say emough about my doctors. I use Kramer, Greenstein and Gronau. Dr. Gronau is a young female, and I highly recommend her. I had a very unusual complicated pregnancy, and she was right on top of everything. In fact, 2 of my L&D nurses said that they used my group also, which says a lot. We just moved out to Port Jeff, but if I do this again, I will deliver in huntington despite the trip.

I'm sorry you had such a tough time at SB. I think things might be much better nowadays.

I was one of those students at one time and spent more time with my patients than anyone else ever could. Sometimes it is better to have a student help take care of you. They typically only have 1-3 patients as opposed to the 10-20 some docs have at once. So you can use them to your advantage to vent and have your concerns addressed.

I ran around trying to help with anything patients needed if it was possible. Everyone I spoke to appreciated it. And people in my family ask to have students because of this.

It sounds like you just had an unfortunate string of insensitive ppl. I would have slapped someone too. I hope next time is MUCH better!

I'm going to be delivering at Huntington. I was in the L&D for a while in early May after a car accident for monitoring and everyone was really nice.

I used Dr. Siegel of the Huntington Medical Group. The main office is in Huntington Station but Dr. Siegel also practices out of an office on Commack Rd in the medical building across from Consumers Bed & Bath. Everyone in the office is really nice and very patient.

I had a scare in the middle of my pregnancy where I could feel the baby moving and the rushed me right into the office to check me out. Everything turned out fine.

I met another doctor at Huntington, a Dr. Grasnoff (?) when I went in for monitoring. He was nice, a bit kooky but nice. He kept teasing me about getting into a car accident.

Im 10 weeks today and i go to WGW its 2 women and 2 men and I will deliver out of Huntington. Had bad experience with St. Catherines hospital and changed doctors. The office had a 2 hour wait an the doctors were so impersonal plus my aunt delivered at st. johns which used to be st. catherines and they left a sponge in her during c-section and she almost died.
