REPOST-Vaginal vs. C-section

* SOrry for the reposts ladies-but I love hearing both sides of the spectrum*

I have a few more questions, to drive you all crazy with, for my last few weeks...

First off- I wanna say, Thank you to everyone who helped me through in making my BIG decsion, and helping me to feel I made the right one.

Im someone who believe things ALWAYS happen for a reason, and in light of recent events (as some of you already know, from reading my thread in families helping families) SHortly after making my decision I found out my father has been activated..and being shipped out...

I cant help but feel-my very uncomfortable journey these past few weeks, happened specifically so in the end they would take the baby 2 weeks early and he could be here for the birth and to meet his first grandchild, before leaving..

Call me superstious but thats just me! With all this said-Ive never felt more confident in ANY decision...I stronly feel if God brought me to it, he'll get me through it!

ANYWAYS- When I had gone to the DR. this past week, she had said we would schedule the apt. to be induced next week..for the following week (which is 38 weeks..SOmewhere between 10/6-10th)

We discussed the greater risk of having a c-section due to being induced...and she explained how risks are much higher when, you dont start making progress on your own (which Im not) SHe also said where c-section is less stressful on the baby its alot harder on the mother...and so on... Depending on my progress..a c-section was to be discussed..

Now I know this decision is not up to me, however I dont know where I stand on this when she discusses it with me... SOmetimes I think absolutely not..Im doing this vaginally, and other times I say..do I really wanna put my body and baby through all the stress of being induced..just for it to end in c-section..?

As I said before...as my DR said she is going to let me body tell her... but Id like to have some grounds to stand on...

I know girls who have had c-sections, and had a great experience..and those who had horrid ones.. But that goes for those with vaginal births as well... If they tore or had an episiotomoy..they were uncomfortable for days afterwards as well....

If she says..well your making no progress...and it looks as if your chances of being induced will most likely end in a c-section...due I just schedule that from the getco..or due I say no I wanna try this vaginally first?

I cant help but think in the back of my mind...the baby and my body has been under a great deal of stress due to the lack of sleep and meds. Ive been on the past month, plus he is coming 2 weeks sooner...do I really wanna stress him out...just go in and get him the easiest way and Ill worry about myself later on...

Where would you stand? How would you feel? Where you in a simialr situation? What was your experience??

I know plenty of people who were induced and had a vaginal birth - I don't really understand why your dr. would tell you that you would most likely end up with a c-section. While it may very well be the case, it might not! I had pitocin, etc. and my delivery was wonderful! Although I am not sure what your big decision was, so maybe I don't know all of the details. Good luck to you with whatever you choose!

If I was in your situation I'd stick it out and try for the vaginal. I had a 4th degree tear (as bad is it gets) and from what I've heard it sounds like the c-section recovery is much harder. Vaginal birth also does such a good job of squeezing out the fluid from the baby's lungs which seems like a good thing.

Nope--I just added on to my orignal post

I had made no progress at all and because my fluid level was low my doctor decided to induce. I went in around 9:30ish on a Tuesday night and delivered Luke at 9:32 PM the next evening.

I had to have an emergency section...because James heart rate crashed during a contraction....however when the contraction started my dr was discussing with me the possibilty of going vaginally...( I was 15 wks early) but for some reason I felt that Vaginal was not the way to go....I knew that James would be better with the C-section....but I never had a chance to express my concerns...James made up our mins for us....which was a good thing. Because I had developed an infection when my water broke...and I was turning ceptic. The dr. did not realize how bad the infection was becaue I do not run feavers...and I really wasn't complaining about pain...I was only concerned for James. My dr. told us latter on that if we had waited to go vaginally I would have died.

my point is...I think that your body and your baby will instictivly tell you what is the best thing to do when the time comes.

I was in a similar position. I decided to try the induction at 41 weeks when I was still making NO progress. I ended up needing a c-section. It is true that the chances of needing a c/s with an induction are greater.

I was faced with the same dilemma as you. I just had a gut feeling that I was going to need a c/s regardless. But I wanted to give it an honest try for a vaginal birth. I know it sounds nutty, but I wanted to experience labor. It was my first pg and I felt like I'd be "missing out" on a big part of the childbirth experience if I just scheduled a c/s. DH thought I was nuts for wanting to experience labor. After 30 some odd hours of it, I still needed a c/s and as it turned out I would have needed a c/s regardless of the induction because of the position the baby was in.

Though it ended up being true in my case, it may not be in yours. However, since you are inducing a bit early, I think your chances for a c/s will be greater also. This is a tough decision for any woman and you just need to know all the facts and trust your gut when making your decision.

Some things to consider: with a c/s you won't be able to drive for about 3 weeks. The recovery is much longer -- 6 weeks until you are given the okay to exercise and return to normal activity levels.

Also do you want to experience labor? Your body may be one of those lucky ones that will be easily induced and you'll spit the baby out in no time. Do you want to give yourself that chance?

On the other hand, an induction like mine could last HOURS with no progress. I suggest you read my birth story so you have an idea of a worst case scenario (I needed 3 12 hr doses of cervidil) and see if that helps you set limits for the induction (or at least be prepared for what you might face) if that's what you decide.

I remember your birth story..and I remember when you were choosing between the c-section and vaginal...

I remember in the beg. you were kinda leaning towards the c-section..figuring "if its most likely gonna end that way" and then choose to try vaginally first... In the end... did you wish you wouldve just scheduled the c-section??

Part of me def. wants the exp. of a vaginal birth..I want to be able to come home right away..and be comfortable right away...However that isnt promised in a vag. birth either...You ended up in the hospital for 3 days...just trying to go into labor...

Either way this is not a choice Im gonna get to make...I kinda just gotta see what kinda progress my body's gonna make...

Well 2 of my friends were both induced and one had a vaginal birth the other made no progess at all and the baby was going into stress and they had to do a c-section. Basically from what I understand is that they try to let you go vaginally but if nothing is happeniong and the baby or yourself goes into stress the nthey try to bring you out of it and if not then they do a c-section this is was my friend who had the c-section told me anyway. I was faced with the same decision you were. My son was measuring over 10 lbs at my due date but said since due date is just a close date to wait it out. At the 1 week late mark they gave me a choice, induce or c-section. They were against inducing because of his size but still said if thats what I wanted to do I could go for it. I choose to wait until the absolute last day they would let him stay in there. I scheduled a c-section 2 weeks after my due date and waited for nature to take its course (which it never did, not ONE contraction at least that I felt) He was 10 lbs 13 oz.

My csection experience was GREAT. I know many people have their own views on csect vs vag deliveries but in the end the only thing that mattered to me that both of us were healthy. Because he was a big boy there were many risks with squeezing him through the birth canal. Those risks outweighed a scar and discomfort for me. Yes it was uncomfortable but it couldnt have been all that bad because I was up and walking around that night and even more the next day. They tell you thats what speeds up your recovery and its true. You have to get up and move (but dont over do it). Plus I was on vicoden for only my stay in the hospital. I only took tynelol for pain after I Got home because I was nursing.

The decision you are faced with is a very personal one. Everyone's birth story is going to be different so you have to read them all then make your own decision as to what is best for you. Until its all over and done with you'll question your decision a million times, I know I did. i kept saying did I do the right thing? Until that baby was in my arms.
