Telling your child?

Has anyone thought about this? I never did until I saw these books.
What are your thoughts? Do you think it's something you will do?

That's an interesting topic. I think throughout a child's life they should always be told how much they were wanted and loved even before they were born. I am not sure it matters if they were conceived through IUI or IVF or naturally...

Most parents don't discuss conception with their children anyway. At least mine didn't lol Not sure if they even know what day it happened or how lol j/k

Adoption however, I believe is a different issue and I am sure there are so many great books out there on how to share that information with your child.

I think going into the specifics really depends on the timing of the conversation, the age of the child and the reason for having the conversation.

I think the most important thing is making sure that the child is able to handle the information. Teaching elementary school, I noticed that some parents tell their children "everything" and it made their young lifes harder.

I don't feel it's necessary to tell your child this, and I likely would not feel the need or desire to do so.

I will do so when I adopt though.

I don't think it's necessary to tell a child they were conceived by IUI or IVF until they are older (late teens or so). If I was told that info I think I would have only been ready to understand the concept by that age.

Personally, I know that I was a very wanted pregnancy because my parents waited 6 years to have me and I was very planned. Now that I know what I know about IVF and IUI I would think every child that was born through those procedures would be 100% confident (once they know what's involved... shots, constant doctor's visits, etc) in the fact that yes, his or her parents REALLY wanted him or her.

Looks like my child will only be conceived through IVF and someday I hope to sit them down and tell them what the procedure entailed and how much DH and myself went through to have him or her.

My niece (20 now) was IVF with donor sperm. She has known this for a long time. She is very mature and her parents love her so much, but they are very honest and open with her. I think I would tell my child, but not make a big deal of it, just because someone might "slip" one day, and that would be worse. Nothing to be ashamed of....and with the rate of assisted fertility these days... !!!
