Starting Cereal

How/When did you introduce cereal? The pediatrician gave us the OK, but I am not sure how much and at what feeding to give it to her. The pediatrician went over it all with me, but it seems so confusing.

Re: Starting Cereal

I asked the same question recently and didn't get an answer from anyone. I started this week when my son turned 16 weeks (he'll be 4 months on thurs). I started with rice, but he has constipation-type issues and it was too binding, so we went to oatmeal. I followed the box directions to start 1 tbsp cereal to 4-5 tbsp of water for day one. Next day 2 tbsp cereal to 4-5 water and so on...after 4-5 and no allergic reaction I think you can try oatmeal, then barley, then mixed cereal. I just don't know when to move to multiple times a day. At first I was giving him his cereal with his last bottle at night because he wasn't sleeping through the night (which didnt work), but now I have been giving him the cereal with his pear juice/water bottle (for constipation) at around 6, then giving him a bath and a bigger bottle to go to bed at 9, remember its only been a week, but with this schedule he slept through 2 nights. SOrry so long....

Re: Starting Cereal

Most people start with rice but it is safe to start with Oatmeal also. Some babies get constipated with the rice so if your baby has a tendancy to get that way you might want to start with oatmeal.

To begin mix formula or BM with the cereal until it is pretty liquidy in consistency. Don't mix more then a tbsp for the first few times for the baby and usually 4-5 tbsp breastmilk or formula. Some people put it on thier finger for the baby to try the taste but we started right with the spoon.

Expect the baby to seem like she does't like it at first and don't expect her to want much of it at all. I'd try one time a day and little by little increase. Try one type for 3-5 days before trying another one.

As the baby gets used to the taste you can decrease the amount of formula/BM that you mix in to make it thicker.

And my daughter hated the cereal alone so I mixed it with baby applesauce and tried that together for a week before trying other fruits/cereals. It is okay to do that also once the dr has given the OK for cereal the OK for fruit is usually OK too.

HTH!

All babies are different too...my tank of a son likes his cereal
Chat Icon He definitely prefers the bottle because it comes out faster, so I give him 1/2 a bottle then cereal, then the other half.

Re: Starting Cereal

I started w/ oatmeal at 4 months... after about 2 weeks I introduced fruit..

He wasnt all that interested in the cereal...so I thought adding something yummy in there would make him want it more...and I was right!

I started w/ a dinner feeding around 5, and added breakfast feeding ( about an hour after his am bottle) shortly after introducing the frut...

@ 5 months the Dr told me to introduce veg. and feed him 3x's a day...

My sched was:

cereal/fruit
cereal/veg
cereal/fruit/veg

Re: Starting Cereal

We started to night and it did not go well. She cride the whole time, so I gave up after a few spoonfuls. Should I make her eat the whole thing?

No, I would not force her to finish--she's more likely to develop bad feelings toward solids that way. Just keep trying a little at a time.

Incidentally, when we started solids, we began with rice, barley, then oatmeal. After 4 days of each, we began the fruits, one at a time, for 4 days each, then came veggies, yellow then green, again 4 days each; now we're doing the meats. I also got the OK to try yogurt too.

My doctor instructed me to start all new foods at breakfast, that way, if there was a bad reaction to anything it wouldn't be overnight.

We did breakfast first, then added dinners of the foods she had already tolerated. Lunch actually just started about a month ago--and she's 7 1/2 mos. now.

I know it's all sooooo confusing; my head still spins with all this information. Good luck!!

It is very normal for them to cry during the first couple of cereal tries. They have to learn how to use the spoon and it gets very frustrating for them. Keep trying it little by little and before you know it she'll be downing the whole bowl and looking for more.

Re: Starting Cereal

My doctor also gave us a good tip that when you start something new start in the morning so that you can watch and see whether your baby has any reactions to it as opposed to starting it at night and then have to wake up to a problem or deal with calling the doctor in the middle of the night.
