My sister is looking for a house in that area and I'm looking for more information. I can find out the exact or close to exact location.

Much appreciated!

I live in West Islip and love it! It's a big town and obviously some areas are nicer than others, but I don't believe there are any bad areas. My child is not in school yet but I did check out the school district before I moved here. If you get the actual location, I'll let you know what I know about it.

Re: West Islip? How is the town and how are their schools?

I grew up in West Islip it is a great area and the school are great to. The only thing is that the taxes are very high. Most people who grew up in West Islip stay in West Islip. It is amazing how many kids I went to school with that my parents went to school with their parents. Both my parents also grew up in West Islip and I actually lived across the street from the house my father grew up in.

Okay, the house is south of Montauk Highway, on the water?

I'm very happy to hear such great things about the neighborhood!!!

Re: West Islip? How is the town and how are their schools?

I also lived in West Islip my entire life. It is a wonderful town, however like mentioned the taxes are high. There is no diversity so I went through a little culture shock when I started college at St John's my first year.

I can't afford a house here yet, which is why we bought in West Babylon, but hopefully eventually we can.

I student taught in the district and am also a sub so might be able to answer any other questions.

FM me if you have any questions.

If she has a west islip zip code then she goes to West Islip schools. There is a part up by Bay Shore Road where it is Bay Shore Mailing, West Islip Fire District and Brentwood schools but the zip code is not west islip.

My ILs live down there. It's very nice. And we bought our house here (in WI) last summer (but not in ML).

Just watch for flooding in some areas. My ILs have lived in their house for about 30yrs and it has only flooded once. (It was last fall when it wouldn't stop raining for over a week. The water table was just so high that people that never have problems with it were experiencing flooding.) However, when we were house hunting, we looked at a lot of houses in WI and Babylon village that clearly had water issues. (There are underground streams so some areas that aren't near the water still have problems.)

There is also a part of Bay Shore that is Bay Shore mailing and West Islip schools. (I was told that they closed a post office or something. They didn't change the district because it's very hard to change that once its established.) The part that was WI schools was on the westerly portion south of Sunrise (near where the Lowes is being built).

But never take the seller's word on the district. You can call the school with the address and they will confirm if it's in the district.

Yea the blocks off of Orinoco are Bay Shore address, WI schools (Oakneck, Cassel, hyman). Dita made it sound like she had a west islip address, which is why I am saying if her zipcode is 11795, she definitely goes to WI schools.

Re: West Islip? How is the town and how are their schools?

Can anyone tell me about the town itself? is there a main street? town? are there any parts that are part of an incorporated village? or what town is it in? Town of Islip? Are they a pain in the neck as far as permits and such?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Re: West Islip? How is the town and how are their schools?

There is no incorporated village. It is in the Town of Islip. I guess the main area would be Higbie and Union - there are a couple shopping centers on Union and on Higbie, and the library and couple schools are on Higbie. It doesn't have a nice little village area so to speak, but Babylon village is right next door and a very nice area to shop, eat out, etc. I haven't gotten any permits but I don't think they're too bad because there are always people on my street doing major renovations. I did check with them about how much my taxes would go up if I did expand my house and they were very helpful.
